Pinto / R1 carbs / Megajolt

Hi folks, contemplating dumping the twin 40's for a set of R1 bike carbs and megajolt to replace the dizzy.

I understand 'Bogg Brothers' do manifolds to suit (anyone have a price for R1 -> Pinto manifolds?) and R1 carbs are pretty cheap on ebay at the moment (£50-£60).

How do we go about jetting the carbs to suit the engine? It's a pretty well tuned and ported high compression 2.1 lump. Is there a set of jets out there that we can choose from?

Another thing is the megajolt unit which I'd want to setup with wasted spark and coil on plug - obviously a 3d map would be better than 2d so does the R1 have a TPS on the end of the carbs that can be used?

Finally, is this a good direction to take?

That sounds good Tom! How did you find the megajolt to setup on the Pinto and where would be the best place to get a ready built unit (I can solder but I'm not great!).

the megajolt was dead easy to map and set up, i got dad to do the wiring to the edis 4 ECU unit

i would have a look on http://www.cate1.co.uk/megajolt/

and
http://www.picasso.org/mjlj/

for info on the megajolt also i would contact Ray Ward on here as he builds the megajolt unit. Also you would need to look at sourcing the following:

* VR sensor
* Trigger wheel
* Edis 4 unit

cheers tom

Thanks again!

I'll get in contact with Bogg about a manifold and try to pick up a set of carbs on Ebay.

In the meantime I'll source the EDIS module, trigger, pickup and a coilpack, while digging around for a prebuilt megajolt unit

I have already ditched the 40`s for the r1 setup, and already have the meajolt too,

yes the r1 does have a tps, but i found it makes no difference as to wether its connected....

the performance hike over the 40`s is staggering...
and yes the previous carbs were set up correct....
robb....

Thanks Ian, we should be ok picking up the Ford ignition components as my father is in the motor trade.

Contacted Ray and am getting a built unit from him, yay!

As far as R1 carbs go, how does £60 with £20 postage sound? Seems pretty reasonable to me.

Consider looking at this site:

http://www.kimmins.info/

He sells a combined unit with megajolt board and edis unit combined. Including the VR sensor, coil pack and full loom kit this is selling at £140

A bargain I would say.

Ordered a built unit from Ray (thanks!) and have just spoken to Bogg Brothers and got the following prices:

supply manifold only 176.25 inc vat
supply manifold + fit, refurb & rejet carbs 243
supply manifold & carbs + fit, refurb & rejet 295 inc vat

They also say they're working at about 3 weeks delay at the moment.

Now I can get R1 carbs for a price of £60, and fitting & refurbing is not a problem for us... however it is going to be the rejetting that will catch us out.

What is the best of changing the main jets to those more suitable for this:

2.1 Pinto
2066c & approx ~10.8:1 CR
Injection head, valves, block, conrods
Polished crank
+1.5mm Pistons
-1.5mm Head skim
Thin head gasket
Kent FR32K kit
Kent Vernier cam pulley
Heavily ported and port matched to manifolds
3 angle valves & recut seats
1600 flywheel

Dynojet kits seem expensive at ~£100 a shot, and I guess they're not going to be big enough for car use anyway.

What are the options?

Look abroad

They're about £50 in the US, if you can find someone willing to send them. Or in europe (France and Germany especially)... I've just 'Bought it now' on a set of 1999 R1 carbs from a German seller for just over £60 .. ok, so it's £20 postage, but thats still a saving of over £50!

Got my R1 carbs delivered from the German seller (who was very patient with my rusty german language skills!) for the bargain price of £90 including shipping and vat.

I've also sent my cheque off to Ray for a built Megajolt unit for TPS.

Just spoke to Bogg Bros this morning too, I'm shipping off the carbs (very good condition, btw!) to them in the morning to be cleaned up and rejetted to suit my high compression 2.1 motor on a Bogg manifold.

Yay!

Waiting time of 2-3 weeks from Bogg at the moment, but we figure we can get a load of other work done while we're waiting for the carbs to come back.

So, set of twin 40DCOE's, running 36mm chokes on a short Weber manifold up for sale! Will post the details and full jetting spec over on the for sale board this evening.
