what happens after the last sierra is broken?

after the last sierra is broken, probably the last mass produced rwd car, from where will the parts be sourced for a rwd kit car?

a) steering rack & coloumn - fwd ones should be ok without too many mods
b) front hubs - as above or shouldn't be that hard to make them,
c) engine - flip through 90 degrees
d) gearbox - this could be a problem? can the diff be locked and only 1 driveshart - which beomes the prop - be used?
e) rear diff - ??? can a housing be made and a diff from a fwd car be used?
f) haflshaft - can fwd halfshafts be used?
g) brakes/hubs - should be ok to use from fwd car

... and what fwd donor would be most suitable - mondeo/escort?

Don't worry about it, by the time the last Sierra is dead, the UK legislation will have banned the production of kit cars. There problem solved.

Far simpler to build mid engined cars though, is it not ?

Like, for example, the Sylva Mojo.

in response ^^^ - I doubt the maxda or any other current production rwd car is as plentiful or will be as cheap as the sierra?

but eventually even mx5 will disappear to the same quetion arises?

mid-engined, hmmmm.... don't want to go there, would rather see your ideas as how to build a rwd from a fwd.

As well as Westfield, Tiger are also developing the Avon to take MX5 running gear. No doubt, other manufacturers will quickly follow suit.
As regards numbers, I'd say there are more than enough MX5's, Eunos's and Miatas out there to satisfy kit car donor demand! (after all, they've been around for over 15 years and are still in production.)

don't forget more bmw 3 series are sold now than mondeo's.

rwd donors are going to be in plentiful supply..... we'll just have to wait a while

The main problem with the 3 series is the slant 4/6 engine. May fit in a wider chassis designed for a V8 or a standard width LHD car.

Thing is though, how much of a Sierra or Cortina do you actually 'need' to use. Or put it another way, how many people build without a complete donor car.

Vauxhall Carlton & Omega, partic Omega - lovely V6 engine with about 210Bhp in the MV6 - can't understand why you lot that build these strange vehicles with engines at one end & drive at the other - instead of proper midengined vehicles - aren't using them already

I no longer run Furore Products or Furore Cars Ltd, but would still highly recommend them for Acewell dashes, projector headlights, dominator headlights, indicators, mirrors etc, best prices in the UK! Take a look at http://www.furoreproducts.co.uk/ or find more parts on Ebay, user names furoreltd & furoreproducts, discounts available for LCB users.
Don't forget Stainless Steel Braided brake hoses, made to your exact requirements in any of around 16 colours. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/furoreproducts/m.html?_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_sop=12&_rdc=1

Use the kraut 3 for everything except the engine, just needs a mount plate to be made up to fit the german gearbox so anything can be used?

Easy solved - go BEC and you don't need to worry about the engine

Hi what with the mazda being the worlds best selling sports car i cant see there being a problem finding the parts.

When stuart taylor did the locost ont the mazda running gear some 4 years ago it didnt take off even tho you could buy the whole running gear and parts required of the mazda for £300 and all the tunning bits for the engine readily available from the states.

Although some people would say why take a practical reliable well proven sportscar and turn it into a not so practical sportscar. But it dose make sence to use the mazda parts.

cheers matt

All you really NEED is the diff, half shafts and RWD hubs from a donor, and mabe a propshaft to canibalise for the ends. Use front uprights and steering from any old thing.

People still seem to find escort bits and they stopped making them long before sierras stopped. Fewer and fewer people use the donor car's engine anyway and there are still plenty of sierras on the road.

Use freelander / MX5 / 3 series diffs or make mid engined cars using FWD powertrains as MGF or Elise.

The obvious answer will be a mid engined derivation of the Locost to take virtualy any of the millions FWD engine/transaxle cars available e.g. like the Sylva Mojo.

Front hubs same as the backs. Just cut off the excess cv/tripode joint stuff.

Been done before on production cars. Can't remember which though???

Cheers,
Syd.

New MGF? Used the front bits from a rover 100 if I remember correctly
