Type 9 oil leak
Hello.
I have a type 9 gearbox and Luego propshaft.
I've found that the rear of the gearbox is leaking oil so decided to bite the bullet and change the oil seal. I'm confidant that I have
fitted the seal correctly but I still have an oil leak.
I’ve been told three possible reasons for this.
1. The breather hole might be blocked, causing a pressure build up.
2. The propshaft is not going into the gearbox far enough (It could go in a few more inches if I made a spacer to go between the diff and prop.
3. I may have over filled it. I filled it on level ground until the oil started to come out of the filler hole.
Any ideas suggestions gratefully received.

A few inches sounds a lot.
I think that there should be about 0.25" - 0.5" on setups where there is no seperation distance change due to rear axle movement.
If it's out that far it may not be locating the shaft adequately resulting in seal wear.
The breather on mine is a small hole on the top of the top cover on top of a bulge.
If this is blocked (painted?) then it could cause the case to become pressurised when hot and increase the wear on the seals, which would leak when
cold.
Are you sure that the leak is from the rear?
Often the oil gets blown away from the true source.
I found a leak on mine due to a bellhousing issue by pressurising the gearbox with an airline (about 5psi).
I did this by replacing the bolt at the front with one with a hole in it.
Another area that can cause leaks is if the gasket is not fitted correctly on the front as the front cover bottoms on the bearing outer without
clamping on the front face. This is why a cork gasket is used to take up the gap.
Cheers,
Colin

Over filled ---- Because of oil leaks under warranty Ford reduced the oil capacity of the Type 9 without altering the level plug holes height.
