ERW RHS seam position

Is there any optimal way to position the seam in welded tubing in a spaceframe?

In general terms - No - unless the tube is in bending (which they shouldn't be) then place it in the neutral axis.

But as very few tubes are in bending in a spaceframe put it where it can't be seen for best aesthetics.

Make sure you don't end up with the seam in a face you'll later want to drill for rivets as it can be a bugger to drill through.

Can you post a picture of the box section as ERW should not have a seam and I'm a little confused.

It's the side with the dark line down the middle of it on the tubing I used, very easy to spot. As for aesthetics, you won't see it when it's got a coat of paint over it.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

someone once recommended that the seam be put at the bottom to help lower the centre of mass!

I would prefer them at top.

When mister rust is looking for the weekest spot.

But at the end i think: it doesn't make a difference

ERW certainy does have a seam, caused by the edges of the material being welded together. The seam is most obvious as a ridge when looking inside the tube, but on a new tube is shown as discolouration on the outside. If the tube has been sanded down to remove surface rust etc. the seam can be harder to see from the outside.
