Pinto Water Pump (Hole)

Right then, i've just bought a new (second hand) water pump because my old one had a hole in it, but after cleaning the new one up with a wire brush, the new one now has a hole in it, but its a machined hole (no thread), what is supposed to be here, is there a bung missing or something

Its supposed to be there.

When the water pump bearing goes it will weep water from that hole giving you a clue that the pump needs to be changed before it fails properly.

its a drainage hole for water seepage past the seal to vent from, dont worry its normal. It gives some protection to the bearing otherwise it would wash the bearing grease and make the bearing noisy.

I must have punctured the hole when i was cleaning it with the wire brush

It is only a few moths old, could i block this hole up?

do you have any water coming from this hole when the engine is cold? because if you do then when hot its going to flow out and cause engine overheat, hole should not be blocked,if it wasnt needed it wouldnt be there,if its new secondhand its probably no good.

I don't know if any water comes out cos i haven't got the engine running

I don't think the hole was there when i got it, i think i must have punctured it when i was cleaning it with a wire brush

The bearings seem fine, no play at all

Not that I can see, you've had two replies both of which state the presence of this hole is perfectly normal, which it is. ALL water pumps have this hole to allow any coolant seepage past the seal to drain rather than filling up the bearing housing.
