quickie on fuel tanks
searched around and theres no info on this.
i'm going to make a steel fuel tank and had two doubts:
1) what thickness steel should i get? was thinking 1.5mm was ok?
2) for the filler tube, what diameter should i get? i.e. whats the most common?
3) do i need to have my sender before making the tank?
4) should i flare the outlet pipe so the rubber pipe that connects to the fuel tank is more leak resistant?
cheers

Could i add a quick question to your list?
I have a sender that has an inlet pipe for the return from the fuel rail. Would there be any problems with mounting the sender and return inlet pipe
half-way down the fuel tank? When the tank is over half full, will it create back pressure along the return line? Should i mount the return line at
the top of the tank?
Sorry for the hijack Tom!

1) 1.5mm will be fine although a little heavy. I made mine from 1.2mm thick, but would have gone for 1.0mm if I'd had some in my garage at the
time.
2) You would be best to decide on your filler first and then use a tube to suit.
3)You don't need your sender before you make the tank, but I'd recommend getting one that fits on top of the tank as you are less likely
to have problems with leaks. If you cut holes for it after the tank is made, make sure you can get the swarf out of the tank.
4) Yes, it will stop the pipe coming off the outlet pipe.

We made two from a sheet of 1.2mm (18g) steel. I used PCL fittings welded in for pipe connections. They are already ridged to hold the pipe in
place.
The threaded one on the right is the one I used.

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.
