Mini fuel sender unit
Hi!
I'm using a mini speedometer and fuel gauge so I need to put the mini sender in the fuel tank.
As anyone done this before?
My main problem is that the mini sender has to be put in the sidewall of the tank.
Do you know of any sender that can be put on top of the tank and when connected to the mini gauge and gives a decent reading?

Get an ohmeter and take a reading of the high and low settings of the original sender.
Once you have these readings, look for a tube sender of the correct height for your tank and same resistance readings as your original.
Can't be more specific than that!

It looks like this yes?
The green wire takes the signal, the central metal tube just carries the sensor....
Why not bend the central tube straight and attach it to the top of the tank....
Or... if you get some tube with an inner diameter the same as the outer diameter of the central tube you could cut out the curved section and rejoin
the cut pieces using the new tube as a sleeve. Rejoin using a fuelproof glue....
Of course you'ld need to electrically reconnect the two bits of the tube now (potentially the epoxy would work as quite a nice insulator). A bit
of bare wire clamped (using a jubilee clip) either side of the sleeve would do the trick....

Alternatively....
Both Mini and Morris Minors used Smiths gauges. Both used non-stabilised fuel sensors in early cars (seperate square fuel guages on the mini for
non-stabilised) then stabilised fuel sensors later on (the ones which slowly rise to the reading when switched on)....
I'd put money on the resistances being the same between the stabilised fuel sensors. The only differences being the Mini is side-mounted, whilst
the Minor fuel sensor is top-mounted.... If you found a Moggy in a scrapper you could measure the resistance... New Moggy sensors are alternatively
available from MGM spares for 22 quid....
Jobs a good'un (probably!!!)

Actually, the Holden website pretty much proves it.
If you go to the Mini fuel sendor
http://www.holden.co.uk/displayproduct.asp?sg=&pgCode=070&sgName=Search&pgName=Gauges&agCode=0617&agName=Smiths+Classic+Mini+Gauge
s&pCode=070.119
It says "This Sender will work with all Mini Fuel Gauges which are within the Speedometer, and also with 070.010 and 070.061."
If you go to those dials (ie 070.010 or 070.061) they confirm that they'll also work with
070.011 (top mounting)
070.012 (side mounting)
070.091 (adjustable top mounting- GO FOR THIS ONE!!!)
070.119 (traditional mini sendor)
and finally 070.232 (very expensive of an Austin Healey Sprite)
They're all Smiths sendors......
Which nicely shows that they all had the same resistances and are interchangeable... I'd go for 070.091 cos its adjustable, one of the cheapest
(though Holdens aren't themselves the cheapest suppliers) and it'll work... Proper job....
Enjoy....

why not fit it into the side of the tank?
Edit to say...
You need to cut a hole either way!

Similar unit was used on Mini Esate/Van/Pick-up

Really? I wondered initially but a quick check of Ebay shows the tanks look like
which suggests a side sensor also....
but I may be wrong....
