electronic speedo
hi all
due to the lack of space for a normal speedo cable, i want to fit an electronoc speedo.
i need advice on what sensor and associated gear to use including the speedo.
the "toothed wheel " for the sensor i can make.

I think the SVA requires that the odometer cannot be simply reset at the push of a button as some simple bike ones can also should be quite accurate.
You don't need a toothed wheel, just a reed switch and a magnet that's attached to either the prop shaft or more commonly the inside of
the cars wheel.

Different speedos have different sensor requirements.
The easiest to install are those based on stick-on magnets. Simply attach the magnets to suitable (propshaft is popular) and attach the sensor to a
little bracket.
Toothed wheels are usually used with VR (variable reluctance) sensors. Trouble is you need an air-gap of typically <1mm, which means the bracket
etc has to be pretty solidly made...

No odometer requirements for SVA, just the speedometer must not read under your actual speed. Some leeway is allowed in the other direction

bicylce speedo can be made to work - I passed SVA with one - magnet mounted in one of the holes of the rear drive flange, croe plug fashion.
they need to be illuminated.
a proper electronic speedo - dial with pointer like mechanical ones use a number of different sensors - reluactance or reed swtich - depending on
model. you can buy the sender to match the speedo for around £ 30.
(I will be making my own for a Racetach speedo).

good question; a lot have 2 digit display that would limit you to 99 mph - try doiongthat on a bike. best to keep the receipt when buying!

just wondering whether anyone had any ideas about how to fulfill the requirement for the speedo to be lit if i were t use a bicycle speedo
