Its unlikely that 911 0r 999 etc is the code but some are controlled by an infrared device fitted to emergency vehicles, would be handy if it worked as nearly all the local roundabouts are now fitted with traffic lights that cause the traffic to stack up at busy times, when they go wrong the traffic flow is much better.

I've worked for Scottish Ambulance Service and now Greater Manchester Police and I've never known that to be true and know that lots of the cars and ambulances get done by traffic cameras for it.

the boxes you see often on top of lights are just sensors that see any vehicle. Why would a police vehicle need to change the lights when they can jump them anyway?!

I suppose it would make things a bit safer instead of slowing and barging through

Cars are detected as they aproach the lights by microwave vehicle detectors at low speed sites or inductive loops cut into the road at most sites.

Flashing your lights will have no effect at all!

Hurry calls for emergency vehicles can be done by transponders but we don't bother in my county as they are able to jump reds anyway. However most of our buses are fitted with transponders!

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

The only way to guarantee getting a green light is to be traveling in the opposite direction to me, they are ALWAYS red when I approach:-(

Hi Davie,
It's one of the few things that I'm proud of this country for - moving out of the way for Emergency services!

This will work in USA I don't think coding 9-1-1 will make any difference as he says you have to try different keys each will send a different code. The sensors are pretty crude so will probably activate over a wide range of codes. As said above useless here or in most of Europe!

Getting out the way and stopping for emergency vehicles is mandatory in the USA!
