Zetec crank case breather box

Does anyone know of a source for new Zetec crank case breather boxes,,?

I dont mean the big ones.. I'm after the smaller engine huggin ones?

I had one but I launched it I think. I'll take a look tonight...

I also have a Vixen S3 that is slowly being rebuilt in the garage! Are you fitting the Zetec to your S2? Any pics??

After reading this, mine's getting blanked off, no point keeping it on there if the valve will never open.

So have a blacktop 1.8 one available.

Pete,
That raises another question... the valve will never open?? What does that mean?

And if its blanked off how does it breathe???

Hi if using high rpm quite often IE trackdays or race. It is not a good idea to just blank it off. It must be allowed to breath so a replacement plate with a 15mm/5/8 bore fitting is preferable venting to a catch/breather tank.

Searched the www a bit and other peeps on turbo conversions and the like block the original hole off but the drill holes elsewhere.

I also get the impression from some Ford forums that tickover and fuel consumption suffer when it's blocked...

Anyone know a good resource for info??

There is a valve in the outlet pipe- the bit which pushes into the breather box, or oil seperator. The breether pipe connects to the inlet manifold, and at higher vacuum's it is pulled open and the crancase vents, air is sucked in via the vent in the cam cover, which is why that is connected to the air filter.

I don't see how tickover can be effected as the valve is shut then. Quite ready to be proved wrong though...

I can see at high RPM's crancase pressures building up, but, recon in normal use the cam cover vent is enough.

Thats correct , i removed the valve from the fitting so as it is just a straight through pipe and attached a hose to the catch tank.I also found the breather box was blocked solid and had to clear it by heating with a blowlamp.
There is very little vapour from it unlike the crossflow that used to fill the tank in a few hundred miles.

So then, next question.

If I take the valve out, connect the hose via a T piece to the cam cover breather and then into the airbox will that be OK? or am I just as well to put little filters on them both?

Yes that would work , but it may be better to just vent to a catch tank as then you will get no contamination of the fuel and carbs etc.

Venting it directly or indirectly will result in a catch tank full of oil.

Dunnells recommend blanking it off. They know their Zetecs!

Yes, I'm convinced, mine's going in the bin and getting blanked off, its absolutely spotless inside so not much breathing going on, 36K engine.

guys,

thanks for the responses, many of you have covered the reason why I 'm retaining the box, but that I just need the smaller one,,, not the big one.

Some people have said to blank the hole,, theres no way I'm gona rely on just breathing through the cam cover.

In the past I too have run the crank case breather to a t piece and then the cam cover befor fitting the pipe to the backplate of the airfilter.

Seabass,, I'm also on PH's, I beleive I was the first to install a Zetec in a Vixen,, this is my 3rd refinement attempt, a chance to tidy a few things further. Pictures below are while the car was on the road 8 years ago. My first attempt used the Formula Ford Escort SI setup.

I've used a breather from an early escort zetec, its roughly half the size of the mondeo ones i've seen.

I vented mine into a bottle as the idle was too lumpy for my liking with it directly blocked off,sump seemed to weep more too although that could have been coincidental, my thought is that there is pressure under the piston on the down stroke causing the lumpy idle?

Prob wrong but all I know is that idle improved significantly when it was opened up with no other mods done.
