Zetec starter problems
I have a 2.0 zetec with a flywheel from a 1.8 attached to my type 9 box. Just bought a starter from a 1.8 CVH and fitted it today. The unit physically
fits, but when I turn the key the starter cog won't engage, I can hear it hitting the flywheel (or something). When I run it on the bench it
throws the cog and spins fine, so the unit physically works...
Do I need a different starter for a 1.8 flywheel - I'm 99% sure I don't!
With the starter fitted the engine can be turned by hand using a spanner on the crank pulley bolt.
Any ideas?
Thanks

did it come from a sierra 1.8 cvh? As the escort and others using cvh do fit but aren't aligned properly!

Interesting, as I thought all 1.8CVHs were OK.
Anyway, while trying for the 10th time, I heard the engine move. So I check the battery, fine! I removed the spark plugs and the engine turns over no
problem. With even one plug in the starter won't turn the engine...
So the starter is knacked. Strange as it turns but just not enough power. The battery is in good condition, and turns a pinto no problem, so I have to
assume the starter...
Thanks

Might be an idea to do a cranking voltage or high discharge rate test on the starter as the symptoms also fit a battery with a dead or gassing
cell.
What has to be done is to measure the battery voltage when it is under very heavy load --- ie as in starting the car.
If the voltage is 9+ or more ussually 10 to 11 volts under load the battery is OK.

Is there an earth lead from the engine to the chassis? Also does the starter have a good earth to the engine.

Problem solved, lesson learnt - onto the next one.
