Rear axle help
Hello all,
I have a case for an escort rear axle, but its just an empty case - I have no other parts for it. If I was going to get the halfshafts, brakes, diff
etc and fit them on are there any special tools I need, and anything else I should be aware of if doing this? I'm trying to decide whether its
worth rebuilding this one or buying a complete unit. All the "lumps and bumps" have already been removed from the case I have which I
would have to do to an axle if I bought another one. What do people think?

Just remember the half shaft wheel bearings are held on by a very tight collar. Ford used to heat them red hot and drop them on, they have to be cut
to remove and the hot process again to fit new ones!
Considered using a Volvo axle? 740 turbo unit (I think) has an LSD... don't quote me!!

Thanks for the replys so far guys. Heating the bearings to get the new ones on won't be too much of a problem as I have access to an induction
bearing heater at work.
What about the diff, anything special to be done there or does it just bolt up?

Hi
You will need to remove all components from the axle to weld the new locating brackets on to the casing.
So use the one you have already and buy an other complete unit for the parts to assemble into you existing casing. Leaves you with a spare casing
should it ever be needed.
No special tools required except maybe a shaft puller should the half shafts be stubborn to remove. But plenty of ways around that with a quick search
on here.
