Can anyone recommend...

...a £10k super-saloon?

Top of the list is a BMW M5 5.0 V8, but the other cars that fit into that catagory include:

Alpina B10;
Audi S4/S6;
BMW M3 (4-dr);
Jaguar XJR 4.0 Supercharged;
<MG ZT 4.6 V8>;
<Saab 9-5 2.3 HOT>;
Subaru Impreza WRX STi;
Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VI GSR;
Mecedes-Benz E55 AMG;
<Mazda6 MPS>;
<Volvo S40 T5>.

Is there anything else that should be on there?

Some of those are not too bad, according to offical figures anyway (believe that if you will) the M3/Impreza can get into the mid-20's.

Whoopadeedoodah! My BEC only gets that low on the track. Driven hard on the road, I still get 30 MPG. Do you really want a big heavy car with a vast engine? Surely if you want a fast car, you want a locost?

True, but I doubt the family would like it much strapped to the bonnet!!

Plus, I'm starting to appreciate my creature comforts a lot more these days (yes, I must be getting old).

You'd be surprised, the credit crunch is starting to hurt the prices of these cars quite badly.

Jaguar XJR (the supercharged one) and with he money you save, upgrade the supercharger pully and have a nice holiday abroad
Just make sure you either get one that has had and engine change (non nikasil line bores) or a post 2001.

How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

Nice, I did have this one on my list originally, but left it off at the last minute...not sure why.

Kind of. I bet you could still find a "brand new" one that is unregistered and waiting for that "58" plate you've always wanted.

How much do the RWD V8 MG ZT 260 things sell for these days?

If you have a family, particularly a growing one you could always go for a SAAB 95 - someting like a 2.3 LPT Estate as they tend not to be as thrashed as an Aero. You then spend £400 or so and have it chipped to 240bhp. Has all the creature comforts - climate, cruise, 4speed auto with sport mode (or manual if you must), leather etc.etc.
It doesn't attract boy racer or plods attention and insurance even chipped is half sensible.
Cheers, Pewe

My friend had a MG ZT rear wheel drive V6, it broke down when it was being delivered and sometimes just wouldn't start for no apparent reason. Half an hour later it would fire as if nothing was wrong and he got a full refund from the dealer after he showed them the receipts for the number of times the RAC had been called out to it.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Hmm, not sure about modifying, but the 250bhp 9-5 2.3 HOT could go on the list certainly.

As luck would have it, EVO magazine has in it this month a comparison of three of my contenders: the Jaguar, the Alpina and Mecedes.

They selected the Alpina narrowly over the Mercedes, discounting the Jaguar for not having the same ability to be dragged around by the scruff of the neck when the mood strikes you.

They intend to convert it to LPG and see what they end up with. Should be interesting...

Not a lot -- it really wasn't any quicker than the ZT 190

Ive had a 4 door M3. Awesome car. Oh so normal when driven as an every day car. I got high 20's regularly. Driven harder and it comes alive - adrenalin rushes all the way.
Such a well rounded practical yet awesome car. If you are handy with the spanners keeping one on the road shouldnt cost the earth either. Just be mindful of the early variants and double vanos problems. Mine was no bother at all. For your budget you will probs get a newer improved car.

If i could find a good M5 for the money id would be tepmpted by that.

Not sure about a B10. Great cars but could be heavy on the pocket.
