Motor excellence centre proposed

Plans for a motorsport centre of excellence have been submitted to the Scottish Government.

The draft proposals, by Northern Ireland-based Manna Developments, are based on a site near Gatehouse of Fleet in Dumfries and Galloway.

The scheme includes a 2.8 mile track, viewing grandstands, campsite and parking for up to 15,000 vehicles.

Developers said the project could provide a "strong economic multiplier" for the local economy.

Draft plans have been given to the Scottish Government to be considered as part of its national planning framework.

Developers said the project could assist in the regeneration of south west Scotland.

Famous names

At present, there is only one other major racetrack in Scotland at Knockhill, Fife.

Larne-based Manna Developments said that, with no other racetrack within 140 miles, it could attract visitors from Northern Ireland, the north of England and the Scottish central belt.

Dumfries and Galloway already boasts a number of famous names in the world of motorsport.

Current Formula One driver David Coulthard is from Twynholm near Kirkcudbright.

Le Mans 24-hour champion Allan McNish was born and brought up in Dumfries.

Hope that goes ahead, at least it will be some competition for Knockhill.

Cheers
