not charging

whilst doing my engine swop from vauxhall 8v to 16v my battery has suffered (trying to start etc) it did show as charging at one point but now battery light wont go out ?checked all conections etc ,could it just be that battery dead ,do they not charge once been drained etc

alternator not wired up right i'd say, as in, its not charging the battery

would agree alt not workin or wired up do you have a multi meeter just put it across the terminals with the engine running should be about 14 volt

the alt warning light works like this
the light has an ignition live direct to it
the other wire comes from the alt and is neg when the engine is not running therfore making a circut and a nice little glow on the dash
when the alt starts turning and generating a charge that wire also becomes live therfor two lives to a bulb and it wont light
so if the light stays on my guess is duff alt
