Network over power
A question for the boffins on here -
I have Broadband in the house with a wireless router in the front downstairs room. I can get a Wifi signal as far as the patio, but nothing beyond
that. My garage is about 30 foot away from the house and about 10 foot below it. Hence there is no way I can get Wifi down there.
I've been looking at the network over power circuit devices but none seem to give any info on distances. If these worked, I could put an adaptor
in the front room, then the garage comes off the fuseboard for the rest of the house so in theory it is all interconnected. Am I right in that
assumption and would these type of devices work over that sort of distance?

mine does and the garage is right down the bottom of the garden.

how about just running an actual network cable ?
it will cost about the same, its pretty much guaranteed to work at that kind of distance 
a couple of these:

after asking on here I ran a couple of cables around the house and after routing the cables it was a dead easy job even for me (I'd never done
it before and I'm a total muppet with wiring stuff...)
took me about 10min to wire each plug - but me being colour blind doesn't help so you'l be able to do them much quicker lol
the colour coding is on the packets for the tool and connectors etc so you don't need to know anything about it really
i also got myself a crimping tool, lots of ends and a cable tester and went nuts making loads of patch cables with the leftovers - so much cheaper
than buying pre-made
(although I should have got some stranded core cable for them, but they do work)

Dave my garage is about 200 foot away and it works great, long as your garage is fed from the same incomer as your house its fine.

These then you can either plug a computer directly to it or add another wireless router in your garage.

Done this a dozen times:, networking over mains from router to wireless access point up stairs.
I tend to choose older D-Link wireless access points (can be found very cheaply on EBay) because these have screw on aerial sockets which allow
fitting high gain directional external aerials.

If its only 30ft, why not just get a wireless access point and using it as a repeater to cover the garden?
That what we did at my parents, one in the living room by the phone socket, one in the attic, covers the garden, garage and half the street!

Most will use PoE (the reverse of what you asking about, so just a single wire to it if needed.

The powerline adapters work brilliantly. My office is about a 120 foot cable run via 3 distribution boards an the BB works just like it was plugged
straight into the router.
I use the tp-link ones.
