eating flux

i feel sick as a parrot. too much plumbing yesterday, i ate dinner with flux all over my hands. been chucking up all morning, and someone has swapped my ass for a tap...

anyone know much about flux? it was flux for lead free solder, would that still have lead in it?

cheers.

My first question has to be, why didn't you wash your hands?
That said, try looking here for data in it.
Final thing, whatever the hell the flux is, to comply with CosHH there should be a label somewhere on it listing the health hazards. Find it, read it and if necessary, see a GP, quickly!

a poor excuse i know, but as i was halfway thru redoing all the kitchen pipes, there was no water in the house!

on the container, there is no mention of it being hazardous by ingestion. It says it is an irritant and bad for the eyes.

and i havent been to see a doctor since i was 15. the bugger has probably retired by now! might be worth re-registering at the local practice.

cheers for the input browser.

I'll have a look and see what I can find, any further info off the tin would be useful. If it's an irritant your digestive system will want to shift it out ASAP hence the free flow at both ends!

Hope you feel better soon.

That's what they said to me when I burnt my hand after welding and leaning on the recently welded bar!
I was perfectly happy sitting with my hand in a bowl of iced water.
Mum secretly phoned them from another room and then I ended up talking to them.
They told me to go to Casualty, I said ok, then went back to the bowl of water. Have better things to do than spend 9 hours waiting with the pikeys at the Royal Surrey Casualty!

Since that stuff is ok for water pipes, I can't imagine it can cause that much harm unless you eat it with a spoon.

my casualty grades from 1 - 5 - metal in the eyes got 2nd highest priority.

I was seen in minutes. Kettering is generally pretty good.

We also have something called a keydoc centre. NHS direct often refers you there - its a local mini outpatients / emergency kinda thing.

I would ring NHS as a minimum. Years of digetion problems cos you couldnt be bothered to queue for a couple hours would be daft!

ps - pipes would generally be flushed of flux before use - and lots of pipes ARE made of lead in old buildings. When I plumbed my first house years ago, there was chunks of flux coming out the hot water tap for months. I was taking no chances of getting a good joint!

A lot of modern soldering fluxes are deemed to be non-toxic BUT can be an irritant (symptoms can be nausea etc.)
Older fluxes containing chlorides and even cadmium can be harmful.
Bottom line - all the information should be on your flux container.
Check with manufacturer if not
Most say "drink plenty of water if ingested & contact physician"

There will be no lead in it, if its the self cleaning flux it'll be acidic so that'll give you a good clear out.

Its more likely a stomach bug thats doing the rounds. I had the same last week, was working in an office and the girls were saying how one of thier kids was ill.
2 days later gee whizz I needed bike clips on me strides,I was Ok the day after but still not 100%.Had to go back to the same office and all 3 girls were off sick with the same thing.

Cheers,
Bob

You'll just have to solder on with it.

Whether you go to a doc or not, the most important thing is HYDRATE HYDRATE HYDRATE.
Something with balanced salts is best (gatorade, Luckozed etc). Avoid gassy drinks.
Sounds like a bug to me.
Importantly, is the plumbing (the house not yours) working now?
Cheers

oh yes... like a good un! id pulled out the old sink unit and the shmia in the cupboard was unbelievable! gas and water meter, plus more pipes than a water works. i cut it all out, ran a hot and cold feed to the new location for the appliances (otherside of room...), and bodged it all in. I ran out of copper and elbows, so i ended up reusing most of the old stuff! after a full day of pissing about, most of the pipes are now routed thru the service gap behind the units.

ramble over.

as an aside, they had 2 layers of lino, cork tiles and hardboard on the floor. what a twat to get out.

I occasionally solder cable for control panels i build, i nearly always get the squits and headaches after due to the fumes from the flux and solder, have fitted an extractor fan in the cellar where the workshop is now and all seams better
