rear gearbox mount 750MC Locost

Hi, I am building a racer with my students based on a Stuart Taylor chassis. Question is if I bolt the rear gearbox mount through the chassis will this be strong enough. I would like to bolt rather than weld as this would mean easier box changes in battle conditions. I seem to remember welding the last one in place. Anyone with any pics of their installation would be welcomed. We run the escort mk 2 gt box in Locost in case anyone was wondering.

Bolting is fine, there isnt much torque applied to those mounts, the main engine mounts bear most of the load.

Bolted. I welded a piece of angle iron to the chassis member, with holes drilled and nuts welded underneith. I made the holes in the gearbox fitting plate to fit my bolt pattern.

Sorry, no pic. Only this sketch: Rescued attachment gearbox mount.jpg

Hi.

The easiest and best for stability wise way to mount the gearbox is..

To use the old Anglia mount. Or as you will never manage to find one Caterham have there version made for them. All it needs then is a piece of steel strip bolted to the base of the mount wich then bolts to the strips of steel either side of the tunnel in the chassis. Quick and easy and this mounting provides stability for the gearbox unlike the sierra type which allows the box to move all over the place.

Cheers Matt

Edit. OK so the site will not allow access straight to the catalogue online. Use part number EM429 in there search. Top right of the page linked above.

Also does the steel bit of the Anglia mount go above or below the chassis rail? Will I need to fabricate a step up as Maarten says?

When I made the engine cradle I have trial fitted the engine and gearbox to reach approx 4" clearance for the sump. Then I set the engine block level (lengthwise). That determinded the height of the gearbox mounts: approx 2" above the lower transmission tunnel rail.

Funny thing is that pictures i see from others, they have only 1" above the rail....

Hi chris done a quick drawing it's in my archive under useful info maybe . At the bottom. To big to put up.

Do you not already have the two steel strips welded to the inside of the tunnel tubes as in the drawing. They should be there as std on the ST / Aries chassis specifically to use as gearbox mountings so you dont have to drill through the chassis tubes.

Cheers Matt

Hi Matt,

I dont appear to have the strips you describe. The chassis is quite old though - its been in storage for 6 years although its never been used. I dont suppose you have a picture of this?

Regards and Thanks Chris

Hi Chris.

Sorry no pictures. But they should have been there. Either removed at some point or plain forgot to put them on during manufacture i guess.

If the chassis is still in a relatively bare state and the area is accessible i would just weld a 3mm plate across the chassis tunnel for the caterham type mount to sit on. Once you have the two locating holes for the mount drilled through you can pack the mount up to the desired height depending on what height your mounting your engine package at.
Possibly easier to remove small area of floor steel to reveal the chassis tubes and weld the plate to the base of the chassis rather than struggle to weld inside the tunnel if already paneled on interior.

Cheers Matt
