Pipe 1 is to top of header tank
pipe 2 is to top of rad
Pipe 3 wants to be t pieced in to the hose comming of the bottom of the rad
pipe 4 is the heater and this can be blocked off.

Where pipe 1 enters the header tank should be the highest point in the system

If you are going to have a heater then you can run 4 through the heater and down to the bottom hose with a T piece and block off 3. Either 3 or 4 but not both needs to act as a warm-up bypass with the other blocked off. 3 is the proper by-pass, is controlled by the thermostat and closes when the engine is hot. 4 will act as a warm-up bypass and with the restriction of flow the heater gives will avoid overcooling, even though it is 'open' all the time. I have used this method with heater for 5 years with no problems.

See my colour diagram hosted by Lewis Parrrrp!!! about 1/2 way down, its worked perfectly now for 10 years on both a Silvertop and now Blacktop.
