MK POWDER COAT
What is the powder coating like on the mk chassis?
Is it worth paying for or would it be better to paint it myself?
Cheers

For the extra you pay i would have the chassis powder coated. It is a real pain in the butt to do it properly yourself and you will wish you had got
it done half way through.
Also the powder coating is very good and has a great finnish.

As someone who chose to paint their MK chassis themselves - DON'T DO IT
Pay the money and get it powder coated. The finish will be infinitely better quality and more durable than you could achieve with paint (brush or
spray). It will also take you for feckn' ever to paint it and then be forever p1ssed off that you didn't get it powder coated.
I also think it will affect the likely resale value of the car when finished too.

Got to agree, one of the best things I did, I've painted (sprayed) a few motorcycle frames in the past, all I can say is never again.

Talking to chris (zxrlocost) at newark and he has had problems with it flaking off in the corners and starting to rust.
Is this going to happen to me?
Can i trust the quality of the powder coating?

AFAIK, it's not a common problem on the MK chassis. There could be a number of reasons for it flaking and coming off but not having seen it, I
wouldn't like to comment.

I have never heard of any MK's having that problem....or any other manufacturer either come to think of it!
As long as you are careful during the build you should be fine.

On my chassis the powder coat had peeled off of the front suspension mounts. The problem is that the powder coat does not cover the 90 degree angles
very well. My roll bar also peeled and went rusty. But it has been on the road for four years now
I would get the chassis, file the edges every so slightly to improve the angles and then get it powder coated. also it would be worth running over
the welds with some sand paper or something to get the really sharp edges out
cheers

As with most coatings, plate-ings, and even paint etc its only as good as the surface underneath.
They need to be completely rust and welding crust free and even grease free before there coated, so you've either got to do that yourself with
wire brushes, sandpaper de-greasing soloution etc.
Or leave it in the hands of the coaters to prepare it which they'll probably have it blasted before they start.

Powder coat. Its the dogs, you have got better things to do than paint a thousand angles and corners.

Having tried to paint a chassis myself - get it powdercoated.
MK's stuff is fine.

My car is not an MK but a Sylva.
Chassis was made a little over 10 years ago just a few months after a friends.
His chassis was painted and currently needs some serious work to get rid of the rust spots and make it look nice again.
Mine was powdercoated and is still pretty much perfect - even in the brackets etc.
IMHO A good powdercoat beats painting hands down any day.
