Hi Guys,

I have a Pinto and a re-cored escort radiator. The radiator is lower than the engine, and I’m not sure where to start with the plumbing. I presume that I’m going to have to convert to a pressurised system. Most pressurised systems seem to have a third line from the radiator to the reservoir. As my radiator only has two plumbing points, is a T piece on the exit side an acceptable option?

You should t into it on one fo the heater hoses,water pump or inlet manifold,i used an astra expansion tank,easy to mount and a sexy yellow cap

i may be wrong but at this time o night im not goin out too take a look

but do the pintos not have a small pipe comin of the top of the water pump it might depend on weather its an escy one or sierra tho.

mayb you could use that for ur expansion tank
but im not sure weather that would work

I'm in a similar boat - Xflow engine & Escort radiator, no heater, Fiesta thermostat housing.

Main engine-radiator connections are no problem (apart from lack of space at the bottom of the radiator ) and the secondary outlet from the pump will be going to the inlet manifold.

I was planning to use an overflow tank from the thermostat housing 'overflow outlet' just under the pressure cap (the radiator has a blanking cap).

Is this reasonable? If so, any recommendations for an overflow tank?

Also, does the overflow tank have to be above the level of the overflow outlet, or can it be lower? My layout would be simpler if it could be lower!

Im not sure if you can connect to the rad outlet, but if you did you would ned one of those caps that just blanks the hole, without any pressure release.

You could also do what cars had in the times before sealed systems, which is to use a bottle into which the tube from the rad goes. whent he water expands, and the rad blows off, the water goes into the bottle. as the car cools, the pipe that dips into the bottle sucks the water back in. In this system, as long as the rad cap is the highest point, all should be OK.

If you want to use a sealed expansion bottle, I too have used an astra one, and you can see on my TOL pics I guess wha thats like. There are two hoses on mine tho....one goes to stat housing ( a small one) and i THINK a bigger one goes to the pump. (part of the bypass cct on a V6 cologne I think). There is a variant of the tank that has TWO small hoses come out of the bottom as well as the 12mm one at the top.

I think that the water level MUST be above the top of the system - in my case its an inch or two above the top of the rad. This will allow the water to expand up and go down without allowing water to be lost, causing a layer of air at the top of the rad.

Did that make sense?

so in my book, use a bottle on a pipe if your tank is low, or if you go modern, make it the highest opint to avoid air being drawn in or trapped.
