quick rack turning effort

Just trial fitting a quick rack on my mk indy and wondering how much effort is expected to turn the steering while wheels are off the ground - actually the uprights aren't even attached.

Currently need to try quite hard just to overcome the initial inertia and then it just moves!

I have not fitted anything else to compare it with but seems like something is wrong here.

Remove the track rods from the uprights, then move the road wheel manually, I had a lower ball joint that was almost immovable
Then I found that the MK shortened rack hadn't been greased on assembly, I fitted a grease nipple in the centre section and pumped a whole guns worth of grease into it. It was a lot better after that.

I have a quick rack fitted to mine, the steering wheel can be rotated with your little finger. Disconnect column and check that the steering wheel rotates freely. If that's OK. Is the rack correctly lubricated? Check the slipper toque on the rack.

steering wheel totally free. What's the slipper torque?

But having just watch the vid I don't think that's the problem. With the column disconnected is it possible to rotate the rack pinion freely with some mole grips. This will confirm if the problem is in the rack. If it rotates freely the problem is the column alignment when it is connected to the rack.

It is very difficult to turn - that's why I trial fitted the steering column to see if it was OK with a steering wheel on as opposed to something with less leverage.

Looks like the rack is faulty.

That don't look right if you got it of MK i would give Danny k a u2u and ask there advice

Yes the problems internal and will need replacing. Not to difficult to strip down but exchange it would be the best option if it's one you bought.

Your column surround is moving in that video! Something very wrong

Just a thought, the steering lock isn't on is it?

Haha no, it was a "trial fit" so column not properly fixed, but in place to check turning torque requirements
