£25.87 Escort Steering Rack

I have just rang Motosave to see if they sell Escort MKI or II steering racks.
They sell brand new ones for a cheap as chips £25.87.

My questions are:

1. Is there anything wrong with them, other than they are not an original ford component.

2. Which rack is more suitable to my Mcsorley 7+442 Chassis with sierra front hubs. The MKI or MKII, as they are both available and are at the same price.

Cheers
Ben

The recon one was like new --I couldn't believe how good ---so in aswer to your question they can be that cheap

Be aware that the mk 1 rack has imperial threads and the Cortina track rod ends wont fit.

Cheers

Chris

Hi,
On the subject of steering racks, I'm building a 4 inch wider chassis (McSorley 7+4) and using Cortina uprights (when I find some). I need a rack and wondered if I'm better getting a shortened Sierra rack or lengthened escort rack and in either case, how much shorter/longer do I need and what is the best way to about this. I've seen something in the past on the forum where some hex rod was used to provide easy adjustment but can't find the details.

Anyone advise on the best route?
Cheers,
Craig.

Thanks for the info.

The cheapest i can get a recon rack on an exchange basis is £35 so i think i will go for the motosave MKII rack.

As i am using sierra hubs on a wider chassis (with standard upper wishbones) i am going to have to get/make a couple of extension pieces.

Cheers
Ben

Have you got it then? Some of their branches aren't far from my neck of the woods. Is it any good? Do they do mail order by any chance for people further afield?

I did get the rack but unfortunately there was a £30 surcharge which they kindly forgot to mention, luckily i had a sierra one lying about. It is a recon'd rack and it seems to be fine. I don't know about the mail order, give them a ring.

Which motorsave did you get it from? Is it in your garage for me to take a look at? P.S. I think I will be "overtaking you" this weekend...;-)

Craig,

I seem to remember reading that the capri rack is just about right for a +4. Not sure if the cortina is a posibility either.. it may be.

Mackie,
Thanks for the reply, I forgot I had asked the question back in April or something...

I've got a Sierra and Escort rack at present but might look at a Capri rack too. I think I'll end up using an escort rack and will just add screw in spacers to the ends of the main rack body to extend the body of the rack. I can then extend the track rods themselves if necessary using a similar method. It should be possible to adjust out any bump steer by using different lengths of spacers or just shimming the spacers out.

Does anyone know where I can buy suitable track rod extensions?

Cheers,
Craig.
