I need more lock

I put the front nearside together for the first time and spotted a problem:

Full lock problem
Full lock problem

Full lock problem2
Full lock problem2

The first picture shows the problem better. The steering arm is hitting the wishbone and restricting the lock. The second picture shows the lack of lock.
Any advice is much appreciated

How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

What has changed in the geometry and layout from the original set up in the donor?

Modern era Jaguars have the rack behind the front axle, rather than in front

Thinking about it, i have mounted the top wishbone very slightly further back which would cause that but i dont think its enought to make that much of a difference. I could be wrong though.

Are you winging the bracket layout? Shouldn't you know whether eveything is in the right place or not?

i imagine its a bit further back for self centering, but how much further back is it? I'm not sure an inch or so would maki it clear the bottom wishbone.

the amount of lock looks, maybe not enough, but i think it's more than i've got!

That looks like plenty of lock to me, other than what you may need to get in and out of a tight parking spot, would be really scary at anything over 50 MPH.

I havnt fitted the rack yet. Im waiting for parts.
Mr H - Im not winging it. I read about self centreing and was advised to set the top ball joint up to an inch behind the bottom. Moving them isnt too much of a problem as i have only tacked them at the moment.

More than enough lock. Picture where the wheel goes in that picture when it is bolted on.

Are they bolt on steering arms, or part of the upright?

if the eishbone pickup points, and distance between the wishbones aren't too dissimilar, it should be ok.

Seeing as you are using the Jaguar set up why not put everything where Jaguar did? I've never heard anyone complaining that Jaguars don't self centre.

If you haven't tried the rack yet you don't know where the stop will be, wait till you have got a bit further before you start looking for problems. Setting the top wishbone further back works for Cortina uprights but yours may work differently.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

i'm still not sure it'll clear the bottom 'bone, but i don't think the arm will be near at full lock on the rack anyways

Hi,

Hi the bits protruding from the steering arms are lock stops, are they not just doing exactly what they are designed to do?

David

Slow on the uptake I know, but as alredy said, most try to REDUCE the lock! That looks plenty
