BMW 540 LPG

i have been offered a 540 V8 for silly money,i know they drink like a fish but was thinking about an LPG conversion.
anyone know how much to get it done,problems etc?

About a grand ! need to know what year, later ones will go on fully sequenchal system early ones on mixer ! and it will run mint!

About £1k to do yourself with new stuff, you could probally get a second hand set off a range rover for around £500, that's all I got for my sequential system when I sold it.

Is it an auto or a manual? I'll have the box / engine if its a manual!

I used to run one as a daily driver. 20 mpg was the best I could get on the motorway, less than 12 around town.

If it's a green estate with a rusty boot, walk away

A bit over 20 hours to fit a fit yourself.
A stag 300-8 front end kit will cost about 300 notes
Then you need a tank of at least 70litres and multivalve, filler, vent pipes, poly flex pipe ,Pclips and a selection wiring bits and prices say another 300.

Should come out less than £650

Running cost on LPG vary greatly depending on price of lpg in your area and distance from LPG station. But in my are it works out at half the cost of running on petrol.

the best car i have owned todate! 540 on LPG. I paid to have it done and it cost me £1500 4 years ago. it paid for itself in a year.

The cars are brilliant, and i am selling my M3 to buy another!

If you do go for it, don't use a multivalve tank as they are terribly slow to fill. Get a proper multihole tank and flexible 1/2" filler hose. I've done some measurements in the past and they fill up to twice as fast. Fairly important in a high fuel consumption car with a big tank....

Shouldn't be probs with a multivalve, the filling line is smaller than a a single hole but it really should take long to fill. At fill ups my 60 litre tank takes 48 litres and it dosen't long to fill, I usually spend much longer in queue waiting for the pump.

You can use a mulitvalve if you like, a multihole is just quicker, which is partly because of the thinner filler line often used (8mm copper most of the time) and partly because of the multivalve itself. The wife's car has a multivalve tank but with a proper filling line and is OK-ish to fill. My own car (multihole, proper filling line) is a lot faster.

As said, I did the measurements some years ago when I still worked as an LPG system development engineer and the difference can be >50%. Given the large tank you'd need, I would soon be fed up with a slow filling system....
