Big whoopsie...
Due to my stupidity, I had a front hub shear off today after overtightening the nut. The bolt that goes through the hub from the upright has sheared
off near the outside. I'm wondering if the bolt/shaft can be replaced or if I will need to get a whole new upright. It's hard to tell for
me but I can't see a way of removing just the bolt.
I believe the upright and hub are from a Mk1 Escort but looking at some other photos, mine are a lot like Cortinas as seen halfway down

The Escort has McPherson strut front suspension, though some kits did use modified struts converted into uprights (e.g. Sylva Striker).
These are Escort struts (not cut down)
This is a Cortina upright

I have a funny feeling they are screwed in to the hub right hand n/s and left hand o/s to remove
But i may be wrong
If you get it out where will you get a new one ?

That's the thing. If they were easily removable they would be available to buy but apparently not. Looks like I'll need a whole new
upright, and judging from Mike's picture they're Escort uprights cut down. They have part of a cylinder on the top side. I'll have a
closer look in the morning. Are Cortina uprights interchangeable or does it completely change the suspension with regards to mounting points?
Looking at the damage, I'll need a new upright, a new brake disc (big gouges in it), and possibly a new hub (definitely new bearings). I'm
not sure if the inside of the hub is damaged or if the debris is just mangled bearings.

when you say 'bolt' are you talking about the stub axle ? If so then you will need a new upright, some have bolt on stubs, but doubt yours
will be.
As you've discovered,the nut only needs a good nip to seat the bearings and then normally backing off a touch to allow the hub to spin
free.......thats the reason they have a castle nut and splt pin.

Here's the offending upright...
I can't see in the photo above whether the Escorts have a steering arm like on the Cortina. Mine look like the Cortina but with the strut of the
Escort on top.

Sorry I can't help with your question but I have one...how did you manage that, the hub nut shouldn't be much more than hand tight?
