Axle Casing - Repair ??

Hi All
Could you please advise if there is any way to repair a hole in the rear of the Timkin axle case.
This is the type where the diff slots in the front. The round plate as you look at it from the rear, where the diff sits in the middle has two holes, caused by rust.

i would've thoght you can just weld in a piece of metal, i don't think it'll weaken it much and as long as the oil satys in the diff it should be alright.
not sure though
