rear drum and plate issue

this is sort of an ongoing problem. i put 14" wheels on it today and when trying to move a rear wheel it doesnt move?

i've put the drums on, with shoes and all that fittered. when I push the drum onto a plate is the drum supposed to fit right against the plate? i reckon that might be the problem, but basically when I but the drum on, fit the wheel on without nuts the wheel moves fairly freely.

i might add here that when fitting the wheel the studs only just keep the wheel on so i have to sort of hold the wheel up right to keep on the studs...

when I do two nuts up, 3 or 4 turns say the wheel begins to seeze.

any ideas?

it feels like when doing the nuts up im pushing the wheel in, up against the drum, which is then pushing the drum up against the plate, therefore seezing them together?

ever had this before?

thanks

The inside of the back of the wheel isn't rubbing against the hub carrier is it as mine did this and I've now gone upto 15" wheels to sort this problem out.

Just a thought.

Regards

Rich

i did have 13" and this was happening but 14" seem to just have clearance, not as much as I'd like, and I might quickly phone the scrap yard again where I got the 14"s this morning.

but there is clearance already, just not very much so I still dont know why this is happening

Just a long shot but i seem to remember from a long time back that there were differing shoe widths for some applications. But I could be speaking shite vis a vie the sierra axle.

Have you got a pic with the hub off?

Have you put it all together right?

Are the drums the right ones?

Are the pads right?

See if you can see what is gridning together.

just had a word with tiger, and thanks very much to them, they were actually wanting to help but moving on one problem might be my brakes need to be tightened as thinking about it when I put the drum on it only just fits over the shoes so that might explain a bit.

gona get some pics, 5 mins..

i put the drums on with two nuts, no wheel and with the nuts tight the wheel was solid on, no movement although I guess this is expected.

released the nuts slightly and something is rubbing, sounds like it might be the drums rubbing against the plate or the drum rubbing against the shoes inside it.

so I guess this identifies for now the wheels are not the problem.

how can you tighten the shoes up?

get a couple of bits of plastacine or blue tack and stick it inside the drum at various points. Fit drum and tighten and then remove. Youll be able to see from the deformation where it's hitting (if indeed it is)

Edited to say that it'll a probably deform at some point but your looking for the point where the plastacine is virtually if not completely cut through.

The 2nd from last pic looks like the plate isn't flat on the upright.

Also, IIRC, there are two widths of rear pads - measure the width and then the width of the drum.

Is that the passenger side rear? If it is then it seems the leading edge for shoes is wrong??? You could try leaving drum off and use washers of same thickness instead, put wheel on and try it.It would at least tell you if it is the drum catching.Good luck.

As Pat says

There's definitely something wrong here

The backplate isn't flush with the hub so the drum will be catching.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Are the drums new? IIRC the drum should fit inside the backplate. It looks like your drum is too large and is rubbing against the backplate edge.

Try taking the pads off and trying again with the drum - this will elimiate the pads and will leave only the skewiff back plate and the drum in the equation.

Did you grind down the upright to ensure the back plate sits flush as advised by Avoneer in this thread?

the drums where already bought as I got it part built.

i have now reversed the plates because i dont think this way will allow the handbrake cable to pull the lever correctly and because of your obserations.

Im yet to re-assemble it all again because my bolts for the upright have damaged the threads so im going to have to get the upright re threaded, again great!
