TinTops (Astra H) - Error code / warrning light

I've got two mates with astra H's, and both have developed faults

the first one is a 1.6 auto: (~55 plate)
the warning light came on garage found a big exhaust leak - fixed and reset it (code P0170 - Fuel trim error)
warning came back - sensors replaced - and reset
waring light came back now they are saying that its probably the ECU (£250 for a repair and a big labour bill)

anyone got any other ideas ?

the other car is a 56 plate 1.7D
warning light on and goes into a limp home mode - code shows an overboost fault

no idea where to start as this seems to be any number of sensors or even the turbo itself - none of which are cheap!

help !!!

Advise wise I don't know the Astra but on my old BMW 2005 I had a same error it turned to be the eve valve n a faulty sensor, rather than buying potentially 20 new sensors I bought then from a Dismantled one for about £50 n cleaned the eve valve with no success then replaced the sensors and no issues found since then. That car had done 100k when the dealers n specialists couldn't fix it without telling to be buy a new ecu and sensors

I solved it for £50 n sold it last year with 220k in clock.

Dpf filter was another matter altogether lol

I would start with the mass air flow on the overboost issues.

What are the actual pressures?

I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that I hate modern cars and their accursed ECU's

Any running issues on the auto? code suggests either running rich or lean. Couple of possible problems, most likely AFM. But these would be shown up by how the car drives.

If it drives fine I wouldn't bother, my eml light has been on for 2 years, i just ignore it.

I'll ask about the boost issues, the 1.7d are usually bullet proof.

it drives ok, maybe a tiny bit down on power but nothing I'd worry about - but he's looking to trade it and doesn't want to be stung on its value with a light on

If I disconnect my battery it resets the sensor and takes about 50 miles for it to come back on.

Mine is due to a 100 cell cat, and I have not changed ecu parameters with tech 2.

I'm confident his fault is not going to be fixed by a new ecu.

First thing to do on the petrol one is a service and plugs I recon, any little air leaks inlet or exhaust will screw it up so a very careful inspection required.

Diesel one... Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve? I had a 55 plate 1.9 CDTI which had this stick twice - once under warranty, once replaced at huge cost. Symptoms were warning light and massive loss of power (limp home mode?).

Searching the internet afterwards it seems to be a common problem, but the valve can be cleaned with a bit of carb cleaner and elbow grease. IIRC there's actually a dodge to remove it altogether!

Might be worth a bit of digging - not sure if the 1.7 engine is a similar set-up.

on the diesel one, try cleaning the boost pressure sensor. it's on the manifold towards the drivers side one allen screw and a plug. Also try a bottle of redex at double the concentration and give it a good caning to clear out the EGR and swirl flaps!

the Diesel one has one other thing - around the throttle body it is covered in oil - can't tell exacly where its come from though

stole this pic of a nice clean one so you can see what I mean:

as for the petrol one - had a quick look myself

its got no obvious air leaks and has a new lamda sensor and some other sensor on the that looks like it could be a crank position sensor ? (its into the block next to the bellhousing ??)
