ZX9R Carb Dilemma - Megajolt (TPS vs MAP)

Evening all,

I have run into a dilemma with bike carbs for my 1.8l silvertop zetec engine. I originally bought a set of ZX9R carbs off of ebay which came with a fuel pump + rubbers etc for a decent price, however I didn't realise at the time that I required either a MAP sensor or TPS for megajolt to work (they are an older type without the TPS), it was only after have made the aluminium backing plate up to suit these carbs with my sausage filter that I realised.

So I decided in my infinite wisdom to buy a set of ZX9R type E carbs so that it would be an easy swap allowing me to have a TPS and solve all of my problems. Well they arrived today and wouldn't you know, Kawasaki have completely changed the airfilter side of the carbs meaning that my inlet rubbers + backing plate no longer fits.

So here comes the questions, I so far have the following options:

1) Keep my existing carbs without the TPS and fit a MAP sensor, but the question lies in how to get the vacuum tubes to connect to the inlet system as my manifold does not have them on and I do not have the capabilities to weld Ali and they are round tubes so therefore I can get a good seal to my knowledge by drilling a hole and bolting some adapters on. I think it may be possible to buy some new silicone hose with take-offs.

2) I have a mondeo TPS which I was originally planning on using to convert my carbs to use a TPS, however I've learned that its pretty much impossible to mount it onto my peddle and if it is cable mounted it is very inaccurate

3) Buy a new backing plate + inlet rubbers and use the new carbs - I really want to avoid doing this as it will cost money and require a lot more effort to make get a new backing plate to be correct to the new carbs.

If anyone has any other ideas please let me know.

Apologies, I've just realised the set of carbs I have are ZX6R carbs with the new ones being ZX9R E carbs, so I'm trying to figure out if the ZX9R carbs are the same 75mm spacing as the ZX6R carbs, as if they aren't then it limits my options some what.

Little LPG nozzles are cheap, then just drill and tap some holes into the manifold and run MAP

Search for this

Vogas & VSGi = 6 mm Manifold Injector Fittings

£1.99 each

Hello Tatey,
I'm glad the carbs turned up as expected, I have the original ZX9r air box which will have the original rubbers, I can't remember if the carbs I sent you had any rubbers on or not but if they didn't as long as you cover postage there yours for free, if fact the entire air box if you want it

Cheers
David

Thanks for the offer David, but I think at the minute the easiest option for me will be to sell the ZX9R carbs and use the nozzles that Mark has posted about and drill/tap my manifold so I can continue using my existing ZX6R carbs but with a MAP sensor which is supposed to be the more accurate solution.

An alternative option is to use mig weding tips which are 6mm thread. They will need to be opened out with a 4mm drill. I used this solution with zx6r carbs on a home built manifold. I made a collector for the pipes to run into which connects to the Megajolt.

That sounds like a brilliant idea, thanks, nice cheap solution.

if your going to run a MAP sensor you'll need to run a line of the 4 inlets into a chamber big enough to smooth out the pulses - then connect a line from the chamber to the MAP sensor
(search some of the old threads on here for more info)

If you had ZX9R carb's in mind to start with are the ZX6R carb's big enough ?
(ZX6R's are approx. the same as twin 40's, where the ZX9R are approx. the same as twin 45's)

btw its only the ZX9R type E carb's that are different, all the others use very similar carb's (CVR's instead of CVK's)

Are the zx6 and zx9 the same distance apart ?
So they could borh be used on same manifold ?

I made sure the ZX6R's were compatible with my 1.8 zetec, a lot of people on here seem to use this setup (http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=175401).

Thanks for the advice on smoothing the pulses for the MAP sensor.

I also believe hat the ZX6R has spacings of 75-75-75 where as the ZX9 has spacings of 75-80-75, so I'm sure it would be possible to use the ZX9R carbs with my manifold, but it would mean acquiring some inlet rubbers + fabricating a new filter backing plate which I don't really want to replace.

The welding tip idea sounds like the ideal solution for me since I'm eager to get the car finished after 4 years and could do with spending less money on bits. I'll update the thread tomorrow as to how I get on with putting the tips into the manifold.

Thanks for all of your help.

Hi,

I stock backplates cut for both ZX6R model carbs and also ZX7 and ZX9 carbs - saves the hastle of cutting yourself etc should you decide you need a new backplate.

For anyone elses future reference regarding spacings.....

All ZX6R carbs are 75-75-75mm (early Kehin type do not have TPS, later Mikuni type do have TPS)
Early ZX9R are 75-75-75mm spacings (and as mentioned in this thread do not have TPS)
Late ZX9R carbs are 78-87-78mm spacings (and have TPS) which incidently is the same as ZX7 (no TPS)

The airbox section of the carbs are ALL different to one another! The only thing I have found to be interchangeable to date is the ZX7R plastic plate/trumpets appears to fit the late ZX9R models with the same spacings.
