MX5 Steering Wheel IVA

Hi Guys,

On my build I am using an MX5 steering column and so I guess for the IVA, MX5 steering wheel.
Is this ok for the IVA from a collapsible steering wheel point of view?

MX5 steering wheel will be fine for the IVA.

Please note the collapsible part refers to the steering column and not the steering wheel.

I hope so, because that's what I'm doing!!

However, part of the collapsing mechanism appears to be a metal plate with open ended holes. I have matched the mounting mechanism so in the case of a thump, the plate can still dislodge itself. Whether that is actually considered part of the collapsing mechanism I'm not sure, but if it is then I've replicated it. The top of the column is fixed with an exhaust mounting clamp as many others have done.

You should also make sure the steering column routing leaves at a decent amount of angle, I think the guide is about 15 degrees of deflection between wheel and rack. To be fair, it's pretty easy to sort that as you've got to route it round the engine anyway.

And lastly, the wheel that came with my MX5 has a hard centre, so I'm going to need to modify it for the IVA.

I had a Mk 2 MX5 steering column where the steering wheel has an airbag so couldn't use that one. I bought a simple boss that had a collapsible structure, put an aftermarket steering wheel on and used some closed cell foam from a sleeping mat covered in an off cut of leather held on with double sided tape for a center crash pad. Examined and passed at IVA as OK a couple of weeks ago
