V6 Ford duratec
Alfa 12v V6
Merc V8 450sl
The list could go on and on , It all depends on what practical to fit and where you are at the time.
I paid £40 for an Alfa v6 a year ago , when i bought a similar engine for another project i paid £400.
Its all luck.
Just checked Ebay
BMW 3.5l V8 buy it now £150.
Also Dutatec 2.5 £499 buy it now
Jag 3.6 Buy it now £250.
The sky is the limit,
How about this, Ok its a little over budget at £650

Personally I think more than 170 brake in 7 style car is just bragging rights in the pub. I mean what's the point having more than that?

So, you could actually use more than 170bhp ?
Been on the receiving end of 170bhp in a sub 500kg RWD car. Couldn't possibly tame it.
All power to those of you who can.

Maybe not on the road, but you can easily utilise a lot more than 170bhp on track, particularly somewhere like Spa or Silverstone!!
A lot depends on how the engine in question delivers its power though, as well as my BEC (160bhp/425kgs) Ive driven a couple of busa powered BECs that
are also easily above the 170bhp/500kg threshold, but because the wide rev range with the power mostly at the top end, they are fairly benign to drive
because the power ramps up gradually through the rev range rather than a sudden surge of power as you might get with a turbocharged or very highly
tuned car engine.
That said, a mate has a turbocharged Megabusa currently with ~250bhp and even that's not that scary, the power still comes in fairly smoothly
and its by no means uncontrollable even on the road from what Ive seen (not yet had time for a drive myself!)

I agree with Chris, my busa 7 is fast compared to a tin top but still not fast enough. 170bhp is where it starts to get interesting, I should have
280+ bhp in a few weeks.

Id like to see ~400bhp of s14 200sx engine let loose. As soon as the boost hit youd be all over the shop!! Although i suppose its not low cost, you
could get a really good ecu that done launch control and traction control etc then make it really useable....kinda tqkes the fun away though

The answer is obvious.... depends why you want the power and what you intend to use it for.
As already stated - bragging rights down the pub drinking your lemonade count for little.

Maybe you should have a look at hicosts car, it is though at a cost
He uses the rear running gear from a mustang to get the rubber down.

Well I did wonder about this, but I can happily say that 200hp in a 570kg locost is very useable, and extremely driveable, in fact I would go so far
as to say i could make use of another 40-50hp on the road quite easily, if the first 100 miles in my locost are anything to go by.
Yes if you animal it in the first three gears it will spin up, but it pretty much winds its own opposite lock on for you, and if you are smooth, first
gear is the only one that spins the wheels in a really noticeable fashion, 2nd and 3rd are surprisingly well behaved. I think money spent on Yoko
A048R tyres and decentish shocks plus having "only" 140lb rear springs helps.

So you can actually accelerate at 100mph Power/weight is great in a locost, but the power/aero-drag sucks. Thats when 170bhp just doesn't
cut it.
For example my 377ci (6.2L) camaro would accelerate nearly the same in 4th gear as it did in 3rd. The air didnt even slow it down before I ran out of
gears (130mph). Thats when the extra HP feels good.
Besides, throttle oversteer is fun
