What to do?
Hey,
I am wanting to build a locost car more for fun around the home rather than making look real nice and get sva'd for the road. Its only for
having fun like trying autotestings at home myself or a little bit of diffing. Really justa small project that im going to do.
Mainly what i will only be needing is a chassie, suspension and engine. also the other things like seat and steering.
I am going to build my own i can get omething like a 1800 sierra engine or a 2.0l pinto ford engine.
My questions are,
are these ood engines for what im doing. Is there better ones?
Will it be major work to build?
And is there any chassie plans that I could use for this?
lso any other help would be appreciated. Such as how much steel would cost?

I would just buy the Haynes book and miss out all the stuff you need to make it road legal.
Those engines are fine probably the Zetec is the one to go for.

Building a car is a pretty major undertaking how ever you look at it and it will take longer than you expect. You will learn lots, much from the site
here, however I would not build it without allowing for taking it on the road in the future. You will be so proud of your achievement you will want to
show it off!

also would i not be better getting a back wheel drive engine as id want it backwheels drive or would changing a front wheel drive to back wheel drive
not be to difficult. I thought this becasue the zetec began in 92 which was front wheel drive escorts?

you can bolt the zetec straight to a Sierra gearbox to make it rear wheel drive anyway.
What sort of budget are you thinking of to build something??

na im not gonna set a budget but would only want to spend abotu 500 if possible. however i coukld triple that if its done oer time.

Look for the Mcsorley chassis plans - I think they're linked from here - corected 'standard' locost chassis plans. Fab brackets to
fit your engine - so pretty much any engine can be made to work. You have more difficult choices for the back axle - though it sounds like
you'll be wanting escort/cortina/capri live axle. But you can do de-dion or wishbone IRS if you want to push the boat out

In the big picture, it's going to take about as long make something that you plan to only drive offroad as it would to make it road-legal.

hmm im not so sure. I want this for fun purposes only so all I will need is a rough sierra and some metal. metal will be the expensive part.
I dont need it to be astheticly pleasing. And i have some bucket seats here allready
