reverse /handbrakes for 3 wheeler

Does anyone have the new iva rules.
I need to know if I will need to fit reverse and hand brakes to my build.
Three wheeler, two at front one at rear.
Denis.

I think 3 wheelers are tested under MSVA rather than IVA. If that's true (I really hope it is) there's no requirement for reverse.

For handbrake you have to brake all the wheels on 1 axle, so both fronts or the single rear. You have to achieve a percentage of the vehicle's weight as handbrake force. Obviously that's easier spread over 2 wheels than 1. You have to have a secondary braking system which can either be a split main brake system or the handbrake. The percentage for this is higher than for the handbrake.

My trike has a dash pull handbrake driving both front wheels. Theoretically it could achieve the same brake force as the foot pedal on the front axle. You'd have to pull it hard though. The front axle makes more brake force than the rear so I'm guessing I'll be OK.

Hot from the MSVA manual:

You must have two independent service brakes or a single line brake plus an emergency brake which can be the hand brake.

Front brakes 28.5%
Rear brake 28.5%
combined service brake 50%
secondary brake 23%
parking brake 18%

where the percentage is the braking force / laden weight, where the laden weight is the unladen weight + 75kg for each seat.

The version for free download direct from VOSA is more up to date.

Interesting doc that, first thing I've noticed and wasn't aware of:

6. A system of head restraint must be fitted on every outboard front seat.

Cheers Rich

3-wheelers, unless VERY heavy, will be tested under Motorcycle SVA (no IVA here). The requiremts are really very easy compared to car IVA or the old car SVA.

Hand brake

I have just picked up a calliper from a Suzuki burgman scooter which has a mechanical handbrake incorparated.
I will try to replace the piaggio rear calliper with the Suzuki one . Hope it works.
