obd scanner/tool?

hi all.

After my 3rd visit in as many weeks to my mates garage to have fault codes read I really to get myself a fault code reader. The current household fleet consists of a 2007 focus st, a 2006 jag x type and a 2007 zafira.

Can anyone recommend a fault code reader that is also able to reset warning lights preferably one that would work on all the fleet?

would this do the job?:

cheers
Steve

Laptop/netbook and a Gendan Interface will do that and more.

I recently bought the Autel MS509 Code reader. I paid about £45 inc postage brand new off a company on Ebay. It does live data recording to find out intermittent faults too. I have a Ford fleet at home too and it works on them fine. Just last week a pals Porsche Boxters engine light came on, plugged in the scanner and bingo, fault found in seconds. Then I swicthed off the check engine light on the dashboard easily. Easily identifies the problem. At least my pal now knows what to get fixed on the car. A local Porsche specialist wanted to charge £50 to do the same job so this piece of kit pays for itself very quickly.

If you just want to read codes and reset the lamp get a cheap one.

I paid £9.99 for one a few years, it is powered by the socket and does just that, if you want to look beyond the engine it all gets very bespoke and will cost a lot more.

The thing to remember is that a fault code is an indication, so run a car out of petrol and it may throw up fuel pressure and lambda codes as it mixture goes weak.

I also have one that cost over £100 and provides a dashboard view and logging facility when attached to my laptop, it has not been out since the cheap one arrived.

Regards Mark

That is a fairly old model you can get the same model or equivalent (Memoscan U480) model much cheaper on ebay however these days don't buy any scanner that can't read live data and pending faults.

The Autel MS509 and Memoscan U581 have already been mentioned the MS310 is worth checking out but if you think at some time in the future have a VW group car in the fleet then consider the Memoscan U585 or U600.

If buying off ebay look for a seller either genuinely from the UK (or US) or with UK stock.

Scangage won't give the full range of live data

I recently bought a Bluetooth OBD adaptor (ELM327 copy) and installed 'Torque' on my android phone. I don't think I'll ever bother breaking out the laptop and OBD cable again.

What do we reckon to one of Mini ELM327 Bluetooth V1.5 OBD2 OBDII Auto Diagnostic Scanner Scan Adapter Tool ?

The size appeals rather as something I can just leave in the car without worrying too much.

The quality of these is a bit of a lottery but at the price they are worth a punt...........................

You would have been better off with one that advertises working with torque and a uk seller but no great loss for the money.

yeah I did do, I didn't go for the one in the link above, it was a few quid dearer but was advertised to work with torque.
