Computer problem!

I have had a BT engineer here all afternoon because my nice new TalkTalk broadband connetion does not appear to be running correctly.
The line runs fine at 4.7Meg, for him connecting to BT.
My nice new connection to TalkTalk is running at...........................wait for it................490 kb!
Yes, my new broadband connection is even slower than dial-up!
Oh happy days.
With this level of incompetence, I am now convinced that TalkTalk is a secret government agency.
Rant over.
Sorry about that, but I had to vent some pressure. again.

Just one thing - when you say 490kb do you mean kb or kB? There's a subtle difference that a lot of people don't know about (apologies if you do).

Broadband speeds are specified in kb's, or kiloBITS, whereas download speeds are usually quoted in kiloBYTES. One kB is equal to 8kb.

So for your speed of 490, if that is actually in kB then that's equal to 3920kb, or roughly a 4Mb (megaBIT) internet connection. Admittedly that's still not your 4.7 but it's not too far off...

Believe it or not, I actually do know the difference.
When you test your download connection speed (speedtest.net), it is measured in kb (kilobits).
Otherwise last week I would have had a 32Meg connection and probably not have complained.

Edit: I'm not losing sleep over this. The skiing is on. I have to watch it with SWMBO. :

The problem isn't on my machine, it's the ISP I chose.
