BEC MPG

Done a few searches on this today but cant find anything. however this must have been discussed more than once.

Spent Saturday morning at the BEC centre checking out my car and asked about MPG. Chris quoted 20 MPG but he is such a pirate on the road we know that's the slightly lower band.

I am driving from Gatwick to Donnington in April and then doing two days on track. Wanted to know what I would expect to see on both the motorway cruising up there, and then on track.

car is a 2003 fi R1 MK.

Is there any benefit using high octane such as optimax etc over a normal 95?

Will be two adults at all times in vehicle

Otherwise the service station just up the road is a lot cheaper than buying fuel at donnington itself. And the sandwiches are a little more resonable too!

My R1 BEC returns the same 32 MPG quoted by Mr Yamaha when used normally (full throttle to the red line whenever road conditions allow).

Gentle A road cruising, a rare thing, moves that into the upper 30s. On the track, I get between 20 and 22 MPG. Others quote lower figures, but I can't comment on their accuracy.

Remeber buying fuel at donnington before in my clio v6. not cheap!

jerry cans are out the question as i have nowhere to store one! might fill up befor each day and see how i get one !

No, 1998 on carbs. Custom airbox, hugh straight through silencer and rejetted to suit.

My car is having the same engine from Chris and I'm expecting better than the old blade used to do mpg-wise. Previously my car would do a tank plus two 20L jerries on a track day driven hard. I never took much notice on the road so cannot really comment. It was considerably more economical though.

If you take it steady on track you'll easily get away with a tank in the morning and one in the afternoon. Just fill up at lunch somewhere nearby.

My ZZR runs at around 30mpg on a motorway run to say Donington Show or Stoneleigh, around 20mpg on a blat and 10mpg on a track day!

Getting to / from the track shouldn't be a problem but don't under-estimate the thirst of an engine on a track day. You'll likely struggle to get more than 10-15mpg on the track. I'd say fill up the passenger seat with Jerry Cans but doubt your passenger would be too chuffed..... You could make up a frame that attaches to the roll bar and carries a couple of 20L Jerry cans....

i dont think you will need much because youll be spending all day trying to get through the noise test.????

Good point re Donny. I have never even bothered booking a day there due to the restrictions.

I used to get 120 miles to a tank in my old GSXRK2 1000. With a passenger. Driven quite sensibly!

think a refill is required on the track day then lol. or i buy a jerry and fill it there.

I am going to a tuning show which has track time. my car club gets to go on sessions. two days track though should be fun. and there will be plenty of flanjita to dribble over when the track is not on!

Last weekend I went over the tops of the North Pennines for about 60 miles of mixed driving - WOT whenever I could + a bit of cruising real mixed hardish driving.

30mpg!

I was amazed - wouldnt have got much more than that on my VFR and certainly would have got much less in my 528i - its turning to be a practical vehicle after all!

Now where's that sticky notepad for the windscreen..........
