Laptop Problems

Hey Guys,

Ive been having some problems with my laptop recently, wondering if any of you guys have any ideas of how to solve them.

1. The sound can sometimes go very fuzzy. It will be fine for a while then go really bad, a bit like on a radio when signals bad. Then it will be fine again. It can stay like this for a few minutes, or a few hours. All completely randomly.
2. When watching stuff on Youtube and iplayer etc the picture can do similar things to the sound. It will be fine but then go really jumpy for a bit and then be fine. Again it does it all quite randomly and can be fine for ages then go really bad for ages.
3. It doesnt seem to want to play DVDs. The disk drive works fine as i have had many data CDs in there and have been able to get files off it no problem. But the DVDs wont play. Sometimes it open the menu of the DVD but then when i try and play it so select a chapter it will just completly freeze. Ive tried both the different media players on my laptop. Both windows media and the acer version both with same results.

The Laptop is an acer aspire 7535. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Cheers
Mikkel

In previous version of windows you could go Start > Run > type dxdiag and hit enter

This displays all the directx details including a sound tab that shows the device and driver info.

In WIN7 I imagine you go to the round blob (start button) and type dxdiag in the search box on the menu.

Otherwise right click on My Computer > Manage > go to Device manager and look for the audio devices and their properties.

Not being funny ....... Have you still got the box?

Well if you have put it in there and send it to Graham Capps
or one of the it guys here on this forum
who do this stuff as a line of work.

That may save you a load of grief and
perhaps a local techie could teach you how it's done

The only problem is i use it every day and cant really do without it so hoping its just a simple problem. Come the summer when ive finished uni for the year that might be an option but not for a while yet.

done a bit of googling, seems your not the only one....

did your laptop come with win7 on it or did you use a free upgrade from vista ?

it was the free upgrade, upgraded a few months after it became available

i'd try re-installing the drivers with the latest win7 ones from the acer site, even if they are the same as you've got now

if that didn't work I'd be tempted to do a complete re-install with a fresh copy of win7 (rather than vista - then upgrading)
I've heard there can be issues with the upgraded versions....

Ok thanks, will have to wait til im home from uni i guess then as all my back up discs are there.

Ive just been in to control panel and the performance information and tools, and it is showing my processors subscore (between 1.0 and 7.9) as 1.9. All the others and in the 3s and 4s aswell so nothings running particularly well. Anyone know why the subscore might be so low?

^^ its probably just that its a bit of an old slow cpu then
(its been out for 3 years now and it was never a top end one)

did a bit of googling and found a benchmark for yours at 1086 and on the same scale my i7 desktop one was 5564

no idea what the units are - but I guess thats the difference between a 1.9 and a 7.4 as far as win7 is concered
(the latest high end ones where up at the ~12,000 mark

what do you mean by bench mark? is that just the speed it runs at?

Its not even 2 years old and was one of the higher end spec wise when i bought it so i hope its not just a bad cpu

ahh right ok.
Nah i never expected mine to be fast the highest, as like you said, it is a laptop after all.

But the only thing is my mates if on a 5 rating and its a not as high specced as mine bought around the same time so a little surprised more than anything.

It does feel like it runs very hot sometimes could this be causing it to slow down and have problems? How could i solve this?

i will try check for dust etc and give it a clean.

I run it on the power pack normally so its not on any power saving mode. Normally runs a high performance mode on the supply and the power saving mode when unplugged. But have the problems plugged in
