Removable panels
I'm planning on making my bodywork removable so that I have good access for modifying my car when it's finished, has anyone else done this
and if so how did they do it? I was told in another forum to use quarter turn fitments but these look hard to fit and I'm worried that the
panels might rattle at speed. Any suggestions?
It's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care...

1/4 turn fasteners such as Dzus and Camloc are held under tension by a spring, so they wont rattle. They're very easy to fit and use, but they
are pricey.

This is the Dzus spring, which is pop riveted to the chassis tab. The spiral slot (just visible at the bottom of the first pic above) engages with the
spring, and locks after 1/4 of a turn It creates quite a large clamping force.

A friend of mine have used stainless self drilling screws to fasten the side panels on his locost.

yes and cheaper but to fix the nose I prefer the other ones do you now where I can find???

Another option would be to use rivnuts.
That is what they are for!

Yes, I use them almost exclusively for the entire body work.
IMO, using screws/Rivnuts would be a pain in the 4rse. Alright I suppose if you only planned on removing the panel once a year or so.

Rorty, is there any way of attaching the Dzus tab without welding? I've never done any and don't have the equipment either.
Also, how many would I need to use on, say, the side panels? Are we talking 2 or 3 or tens?

The only time I've ever used Dzus fasteners I've always welded the tabs on. Unless you have access to the rear of a suitable fixing area,
you're out of luck, as these are not blind fasteners. Even if you had access to the rear, you'd have to buy/make a dimple die to create
the same dimpled shape as the centre of the Dzus tabs, to allow clearance for the 1/4 turn body.

We use similar dzeus fasterners at work on aeroplanes for access panels, and at 400mph they definitely dont rattle (providing you use the correct
lengths of course) Why dont you just use alloy pop rivets theyre as cheap as youll get, and are easy to remove, just drill off the head and punch out
the tail.

Dzus fasteners are what I'll be using, pop riveted or welded to chassi/sbrackets. They don't vibrate or come loose, we've used them
on 140mph race cars. available from demon tw**s or elsewhere probably cheaper!

I've made my panels removable too, using dzus fasteners all round and on nose cone.
They definately don't rattle or come loose!
(experience with classic/historic race cars).
