Making wishbones Picture heavy

A while ago a colleague asked me if I could make some wishbones for him. I of course thought "Easy" and stupidly said yes.

Then he sent me the bones to, er, copy.. Here they are.

Some nice detail of the 'straight' one..

These are off a French built (should have twigged there really) Seven rep made by Georges Martin who previously made motorbikes that you'll only know about if you once wore flares.

They use a Triumph upright and the caster is determined by the angle of the two brackets welded (or welded and brazed in this case) onto the bottom wishbone which is itself a bent out of 30X2 tube.

As both the bottom wishbones were bent I had to do some research to find what shape they realy should be. I also got lucky and a pal measured the straighter of the two on a 3D measuring machine for me.

Next step was to create some proper drawings...

And get some tube bent at a 75° radius over 139°....

Redesign and then get laser cut some new plates..

Machine some threaded bungs

To suit all the rod ends from McGill Motorsport (top people BTW)

Tig bungs in place

Create some fishmouths using FlakMonkey's excellent tubemitre software.

And start making some right shonky looking jigs.

Lots of welding and swearing later.....

All in all it was a marathon job but it turned out OK in the end. Just thought you might enjoy the pics....

Nice work - the end product looks cracking!

Now I know where to go this winter for my new top wishbones with revised geometry!

Nice work Mike.
One day - if I live long enough - my welding may be that good.

Tell them about the bent treacle edges!
