Help with pricing engine & gearbox

Hi,

Note - this isn't an advert. I could do with some advice on the value of this engine & gearbox below.

I have the speedo that shows this engine is extremely low miles, about 13k and all the other running gear that came with it matches such a stupid milage, as does the condition of the engine internals and that of the gearbox. Really is stunningly clean, and the cam has zero wear.

* It's a 1.6 - 1992 Sierra unit, electronic ignition and a super clean twin coke carb.

* Sump has been chopped with an extra reserve on the side, looks a good job.

* Engine is sold with the matching V5 (engine number) & silver vin plate.

* It's also marked with a code showing it is able to run on unleaded.

* Also fitted with the original 5 speed type 9 which I may sell separately that is also amazing inside.

With that in mind. What do you think the value is? of engine & the gearbox???

I have it standing as shown but was thinking of making a custom pallet so I could just start it up and post a vid on YouTube or it running. I was going to put it on Ebay & gumtree but also thinking there must be good Ford forums that I could try?

Also, can anyone recommend a courier who would be able to transport it?!

Thanks in advance.

Did a quick ebay search and looks like about £250 is the going rate according to this...

Bit of a guess, so I am ready to be shot down in flames: £350 for the gearbox and £400 for the engine (was going to say somewhere between £350 to £500 for each).

Others here will know better what the market is for a 1.6 Pinto (Crossflow would be more desirable). Engine ID and donor ID handy for a kit build.

Try Paisley Freight to see if they still do engines and gearboxes. Separate the engine and box and a pallet for each.

Turbosport and Retrorides fora worth a try perhaps.

Cheers
Mike

Thanks so far.

They may be heavy compared to modern engines but my 1.6 could pull my Cortina to almost 100mph so not too shabby. I was thinking more of the classic Ford market where someone is wanting a practically new engine for their car that already came with one, rather than some kit car.

Tbh I have toyed with the idea of just buying a high milage Cortina cos I loved mine and then using the engine for that. Most seemed to be 1.6's anyway.

If I don't get offered much for the engine, I'll just put it into storage till I get a car for it. Re-live my youth

Here is the link to Paisley Freight: https://www.paisleyfreight.com/car-parts-courier

Also try Palletline for engine: https://palletonline.co.uk/engine-delivery & for the gearbox: https://palletonline.co.uk/car-parts-courier
Palletline may offer pallet supply too?

Forgot to say nice looking engine and gearbox and sounds like good working order - if I was in the market for such running gear I would be heading your way. I am curious if Ford experts can give you a better idea - anything rwd Escort seems to have a premium. If you sell the gearbox separately give folk the info on donor car so they understand what length tailhousing it has as (for example MG Midget folk only want one type) as well as then the gear ratios.

Wonder if anyone on the Westfield Sports Car Club forum is looking for such running gear as part of a sensible budget rebuild of their 1980s/early 1990s Pinto powered car and is not going down the engine upgrade-itus route either bike or something that mates to a MK9 gearbox. Westfield gurus here will know what Mk9 fits and which Westfields commonly had Pintos popped in - was it ever an option, just something owners did when Sierra or Cortina donors (with different gearbox) were affordable?

Cheers
Mike

I think the estimates given so far are too low. If you get the right buyer then I think you would be looking at north of £1k. If I had a classic Ford that had this engine fitted and needed a replacement / rebuild I would be weighing up the cost of this compared to what you are selling.

I could be wrong but suspect a rebuild of a Pinto and type 9 is likely to be at least £1500. I guess the only thing that would concern me as a buyer would be the question of how good your engine and box really is, whereas a rebuild would have some form of warranty.

Very small market for the 1.6 Pinto, majority of Escorts etc that were 1.6's standard are now upgraded to 2.0's because the engine still looks the same as original but can be tuned to deliver good power!

Type9 will sell easily,I would put them on Ebay listed separately with reserves on the price and see how they get on.

As others mentioned, I would expect the engine will be tricky to sell, as it is not at all sought after. Gearbox should fetch £350 easily.
But as with all secondhand stuff, much is down to will anybody 100% believe is such a low mileage engine/box? The speedo my have been right round, so documented history would be useful if available. Just looking in a gearbox (or engine) doesn't tell you much

This is a sale that would go well on Facebook Pinto forum and Classic Ford pages, the 1.6 is not a desirable engine as it is the same size and weight as a 2.0 but 25% down on power.
The gearbox maybe worth more than the engine but someone has painted it red and most Ford fanatics want the aluminium bits unpainted that said I still thing the Ford & Pinto Facebook pages are a good targeted place to start.

^^^

Agree the gearbox being painted red may put some Ford purist buyers off. Building my MK Indy, I painted my 2.0 Pinto block red, but left the gearbox and bell housing untouched (apart from a quick clean up). Couldn't see them in the transmission tunnel / under the car anyway.

Also agree the gearbox may well fetch more than the 1.6 engine. That said, the engine does appear to be in very good order so someone may well be keen to acquire it (not everyone's power hungry).

I'd try ebay. Ford nutters will pay anything, baffles me. My pinto went for 4 times what I was hoping for. That was 2.0 though.

ok I know I'll never please everyone as I like red painted engines etc. so I'll put them on ebay -

With a reserve of -

Engine - £500

Gearbox - £450

sensible?

And if the don't sell for at least that, then I keep them for myself and get a Cortina to put them in
