DIY Foam Air Filter?

Anyone made their own faom air filter to poke out of the bonnet?

If I were to give it a go - is it any special kind of foam?

Perhaps a gauze at the base to prevent it being 'sucked in'

Alternatively who supplys them?

I made my filters from a BX inner. (Cut in half to make 2)

It's a foam tube with a plastic anti collapse square mesh inside it.

I didn't put them through the bonnet though but made a s/s case for it.

It is special stuff - not ordinary foam, but as 907 says there are cars who's standard filters can be canibalised. Try and get your local factors to let you have a look.

you need to find one large enough to cover your base plate with around a 20mm overlap, put something over the intake to give shape, steel or plastic mesh is ideal. this stops the foam"sucking in".

Cover the mesh and fix the edges under the base plate - I used a collar 10mm wide the same outside dia as the base plate and riveted it on, but I've seen it done with contact adhesive.

Cheers

Hi Chris

I went to Halfords and peeked in all the boxes.
I must have looked a right dodgy character.

The pic below shows them on the car.
The perf is off the back of my old electric cooker. Low Cost Eh!

They do look the biz don't they!

Thing is my XFlow filter will have to be above the bonnet so I'm looking for a quick fix for the SVA. After that I can do something 'prettier'

Maybe something very compact to go under an air scoop?
