Can't register without MOT

Just passed the SVA and gone to register the vehicle at the DVLA in Sheffield.

They have refused to register it until I have an MOT.
Does anyone have any info from the DVLA that states I don't need an MOT.

My kit is a MAC#1 2005 and trying to get a Q plate.

DVLA are saying I need an MOT for an age related plate or a Q plate, But not for a brand new registration.

Any help would be great?

There has been a post on this recently. Someone got in touch with Swansea and confirmed no MOT required. i was led to believe we didnt need one for the first 3 years.

U2U sent about something else.

99% sure they are right.

mot shouldn't be any hassle after the SVA as long as the tyres are ok.

mot

IF I GET A MAC CERTIFICATE I WON’T NEED AN MOT WILL I?

After a lot of arguments and deliberation, you will NOT need an MOT as well
as a MAC - UNLESS you build a kitcar that keeps the donor's registration (and
then you won't need the MAC anyway!) To keep the donor's registration, you
need to use its ORIGINAL and UNMODIFIED chassis or monocoque bodyshell. If
you do this, you won't need an SVA but you will need an MOT. In all other
cases (i.e. a kit built from all-new parts or a kit using some donor
components but not the complete donor chassis/shell) you will NOT need an
MOT for the first three years.

I had the DVLA inspector from Nottingham come round to inspect my car last week. He siad I would be getting a Q plate and I WON'T need an MOT but he did say he thought it would be a good idea to get one since it checks some things that the SVA doesn't.

Try giving Nottingham a call...not too far from Sheffield although an MOT would cost about the same as the hastle and the travel to Nottingham!

A Q plate is for vehicle with questionable history - ie the parts come from all over the place so it is still being registered as new and is not age related. To be age related and therefore need an MOT, its gotto be associated to a single donar vehicle...which it cannot be

Hi Richard, I also had same problem with notts office. I got an mot just to get it on the road, then sent a letter of complaint to Swansea telling them that i was going to involve my MP. They sent a letter of apology and refunded £39.95 mot fee. I have sent an email today (after hearing of your problem) to the complaints dept at Swansea demanding that they inform all local offices of the current legislation. Might be an idea if a lot of us do the same

The only thing that I can think of that is not tested at SVA is the horn.
Bit stupid really as it would take no more than 1 second to test it

tyres aren't tested (tread depth) at SVA. Its possible to pass (in theory) on bald tyres as long as they are speed rated faster than the car.

Also, do they do the wobble wheel bit to check for ball joints at SVA?

MOT is NOT required to register the car, it's just that the DVLA are such a shambles that the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing.

I have also emailed a complaint to Swansea.

If I was you I would go to the Notts office, when you get to the counter REFUSE to move until they call Swansea head office and ask if an MOT is required.

Rich.

So as it stands we have no info from DVLA that backs up what we all know, "MOT not required"

Chris W, do you have the apology letter still with you, If you have can email/fax it then I can show them this.

I've had the car MOT'ed today but I have wasted a full afternoon 12-5pm P1ssing around with the DVLA and then MOT. Now I have to travel back to the DVLA tomorrow to start all over gain.

If anyone has anything written down from the DVLA stating an MOT is not required, can you please foward it on before some other poor sod has to go through this..
