Ford 4 Cyl Coil Pack ??

Hi All,

On the 4 cyl Ford Coil pack, am I right in my assumption:

Coil A (MJLJ Diags) is 1 & 4 and B is 2 & 3,

That looking at the coil from the plug end HT's up, the left pin is coil A and the right is coil B.

Maybe I spent too long with too many diagrams last night but was getting propper paranoid. Everything else seemed to go ok, even the sea of ground connections on the EDIS.

Cheers.
Pete.

Why did nobody tell me this before I splashed out on a contactless distributor??

OK - So, please advise what else is required for a crossflow ignition. I'm assuming that the old-fashioned coil can be ditched, for starters. Does one have to obtain an ECU, from somewhere?

Work-in-Progress: Changed to Zetec + T9. Still trying!!

The ECU is the megajolt. In simplest form, it comprises a microprocessor that reads pulses from the crank wheel and controls the Ford EDIS unit which fires the coil pack. It contains memory that maps rpm to spark advance. This replaces the distributor advance mechanism and points.

An enhanced version using a sensor, either off the throttle or air pressure, senses the engine load to optimise further the spark timing. This replaces the vacuum advance/retard mechanism.

There is loads of stuff written about this on the web.

Cost wise;
megajolt = £ 50
coil pack = £ 20 ish
ford EDIS = £ 20 ish
trigger wheel = £ 10
sensor = £ 10 ish

coil pack/EDIS and sensor can be gotten off ebay or from mondeos, escorts in the scrap yard. Rescued attachment edis.jpg
