Rally Designs Escort Alloy Hubs

Today was the day to fit my hubs. My builders has trued them up on his lathe and I have had them annodised, they look lovely. Unfortunately the bores where the inner bearing on one and the outer bearing on the other is too big and the bearings just drop in and are sloppy in their fitment. Has anybody had this before and how are rally designs customer service regarding replacements?

Regards

dan

not holding much hope if they've been machined.
the service is very good from RD though, so if they won't replace, they'll be able to tell you which bearing to fit.

They are these: http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=13595 part of a £700 order of other bits I got from them.

Regarding the maching, all that has been done is to shave the "shoulders" to balance them.

The work done has had no affect of the bores where the bearings are situated.

TBH if they give you warranty on them then I think you will be very lucky Did you contact them prior to machining to notify them of any defects?

Never even considered there would be a problem. How can they argue what we have done has made the inner bore on one and the outer bore on another become larger?

You could've done anything before you anodised them. Good luck

I could of, but then I would be sat in the garage today saying "shite, I've buggered my hubs up, better order another set" rather than asking questions here as to what Rally Designs customer service is like.

^ you'd be surprised of the number of folk that would say "shite, I've buggered my hubs up, better contact rally design and see if i can manage to get them to swap for another set"

basically, they are not the same as the hubs they sent you

As soon as you modify them, you void any warrenty as far as I know. They may, at thier discretion, honour the warrenty but they don't have to.

Are you sure it's the hubs and not the bearings that are the problem? Aren't there some Escorts with oversize bearings?

Sorry I wasn't referring to the bores being incorrect, I meant that they were defective and you had to get them machined to start with

Cheers

ps I do hope that you have success.

Well I have my fingers crossed. I could really do without the expense and hassle TBH.

The inner bearing is fine in the opposite hub and the outer bearing is fine in the opposite hub.

Worth a check if you've not already tried them in the other hubs. I recently went to fit a Fiesta wheel bearing which was a cheap one from ebay, the first bearing fitted oK but only lasted 10,000 miles the 2nd one was a slack fit on the drive flange (I bought a pair but only used 1 initially). Both had identical numbers, decent bearing from factors fitted perfectly.

they're group 4 hubs, which i think have oversize bearings. not sure why one inner and one outer are different, but unlikely they will be standard bearings they use. did the bearing's come with the kit?

Call them and have a word with them. The ad states that the bearings are specifically for the hubs you bought, so may be worth checking the part numbers etc to make sure they sent you the correct ones.

their customer service is actually very good

i would suggest first visiting a bearing place to see about oversized bearings to solve the problem might be far less hassle for all concerned

They look like Escort hubs not Cortina ones.
Plus the bearings on a MK 2 /3 Cortina are different from the MK 4 / 5 i think

They received my hubs back yesterday and gave me a call. They offered to machine the hubs out and sleeve them so that the bearings would fit correctly. This would enable me to keep them as they had been annodised. This is something that have had to do before. Or I could have a new set that they would check before dispatch. I opted for a new set and they are on their way to me now.

A good result and exactly what good customer service is all about. Also I noticed I bought these hubs 11 months ago. RD never questioned the time of notifiying the fault or the machining on the shoulders. Obviously they could see that the issue, that was so slight had been there from day 1.
