MX5 electrics to Locost

A friend and I are building a MX5 powered Locost. We will be getting the engine with the computer wiring.
Do I need the instruments as well?
Should I get a half cut?
Where can I get a wiring diagram?

I'd recommend getting the clocks if you can. Half cut?
Haynes manual will have wiring diagrams.

Half cut - not quite drunk enough to fall over with no encouragement.

IIRC a half cut is basically everything forward of the firewall. I always imagined they actually cut the car in half and you got the lot, not sure if this is the case though - might caused problems with the loom/ecu! I think its everything for the engine to run apart from fuel tank. Not sure if you get clocks etc with it.

mx5 electrics

Which motor/ecu?
On the early 1.6 (which I know a bit about) the instrumentation is all traditional with seperate transducers for the dash & ecu so you could mix & match if you want. If you use a different tacho watch out for it reading half way because the 5 uses a wasted spark no-distributor system, tacho just connects to one LT.
Oh and early 1.6s had a crank pulley problem which appeared over time - if it's early 90s & the pulley has 4 bosses on watch out, if it's wobbly you'r living on borrowed time! Otherwise it's built like a brick outhouse & you can buy a turbo from FM in the states to take it up to 270+ horses (genuine - I've had a do in one...) These systems ditch the big air flap in favour of a MAP sensor.
Mazda dealers can be funny about supplying parts for an eunos roadster - they want to get the jap parts at enormous expense/delay. Differences are minor - different winfscreen glass or dash bulbs, important stuff (eg the ECU itself) is identical around the world, even though the dealers will swear blind to the contrary.

Carnut - I have been doing exactly the same thing for the last 18 months. I have found this engine/ECU/fuel injection diagram;

http://www.cmr.uq.edu.au/~rotor/the_shed/jpg/b6-ecu.png

It's the same as the engine I have from a 1993 1.6 Mk1 Eunos (Jap import). Email or U2U if you want anymore info etc....

Carnut - Have you tried asking some of the members of the mx5oc forum? (www.mx5oc.co.uk) They are usually a pretty helpfull bunch, if not then there is an email digest which you could try as I know there are a lot of Mx5 drivers out there that have this sort of information already on their computers. I have a manual at home for the mk1 and will check that tonight to see if there are any suitable diagrams that may be of interest to you.

JAG - Are you using the rest of the running gear from the MX5 or just the engine and ECU? I'd be quite interested to hear how you are getting on with that as the MX% is one of my possible choices for running in the locost i am planning at the moment.

MX5 parts are the engine/fuel injection/ecu/gearbox. The rest is standard Locost fair, Escort rear axle, Cortina uprights etc...

Check out the photo archive for some piccys.

A half cut is just the front half of the car cut across the front floorpans.
Here in Australia it is extremely difficult to import a car which was available here in a similar form. Basically the only way is as a private import, and to do that it must have been registered in your name for a while. Also whole vehicles are not allowed to be imported for wrecking so they are cut in half and imported that way.

A Locost in Australia comes under new car legislation, so we have to use a current motor (basically it must pass EU2 emmisions ) so we are using a current model 1.8 motor (BP I think).
We are using Cortina axle, uprights etc and Escort rack.

We probably won't be gitting the dash, as we re finding it hard to locate a half cut at the moment, and it would be dearer than a bare motor and box anyway.

Thanks for the offer of info and help, and I will probably take you up on that soon. At the moment we have a tacked welded chassis and no motor so it might be a little while.

Thanks olso for the links, I will follow them up when I have a bit more time ( I am only temporarily on the computer at the moment).
