Fuse ratings comments ?

Not so sure about deciding on fuse rating for the various circuits. All the circuits below are for standard components and use relays where appropriate.

Figures reached by guestimation (probably way out !!)

10A fog lamp
10A dash gauges and warning lamps
15A hazards- I know same lamps as indicators
15A side lights and instrument lighting
20A brake lights
20A horn
15A indicators
10A cigar socket for laptop
25A main and dip beam
30A ECU (also feeds coil pack)
15A fuel pump
25A rad fan

anyone want to pass comment ?

thanks

Hi Trueblue here.

Fuse ratings I would revise are the fog lamp ; 10 Amp

Brake Lights ; 10 Amp

ECU seems excessive at 30 Amps ; call it 10 Amps.

As a matter of interest how are the the circuit groups in the donor vehicle rated?

This might give you more of a real world figure.

As far As I am aware
10 Amps are the smallest fuses unless anyone knows otherwise, at least these are readily available and in the fords that I am familiar with.

Hope this helps.

fuses go down to single amps, they are also available as mini blade fuses that fit in the same holders.

a single fog lamp, assuming it was a 21w bulb, will draw less than 2 amps. Likewise, a pair of brake lamps at 42w total is 4 amps. The horn is fused at 30amps in a sierra, so thats what i used.

with regards to the headlights, i seperated the dips and mains onto a different fuse, to keep some lights in the event of a failure in one circuit.

If the ECU is also powering the coil pack does 10A still sound enough ?

thanks

If each of the circuits below are fused independantly then I think you could come down a bit for safety on a new build on most of these. You want to use the lowest rating you can get away with, that wont blow under normal useage.
Use Watts divided by Volts = Amps.
So indicators 4x 15 watt bulbs = 60 watts divided by 12 volts = 5 Amps.
You could fuse AT this rating as the fuse wont blow until way over but common practice would be use the next available rating above when borderline ie 10 Amp.
etc etc
Hope this helps

For something you`re not sure about, start low and move up if it blows or be scientific and measure it and select an appropriate rating.

fuse ratings

Take your point about the coil pack;

worth finding out as manufacturers lump it all together to save on wiring ; what was it on the original motor?

learnt about fuses size as the car shop i
normally frequent dont have anything smaller than 10 Amps.

I think you are a bit high in rating on several.

If you know the power, its easy to choose fuse.

Power/13,5V= consumed current.
(13.5 is operating voltage during driving)

When you know the current, choose next possible/available fuse.

For example: 7A current would mean a 10A fuse.

Guide line: Do not use > 80% of the stated fuse current, or the fuse may get weakend with time and blow.

Also consider the fuse to blow within seconds at about 135-140% of the fuse rated current, and faster at higher currents.

OK so my calcs (watts\13.5V=Amps)

Main and dip beam

Main = 2 x 60W = 8.89A so requires 10A fuse ?
Dip = 2 x 55W = 8.14A so requires 10A fuse ?

however mine are on the same fuse so 20A / 25A required ?

Side and inst lighting

Side and inst = 65W total = 4.81A so requires 7.5A fuse ?

Fog Lamp

Fog = 1 x 21W = 1.56A so requires 3A fuse ?

Brake lamps

brakes = 2 x 21W = 3.11A so requires 5A fuse ?

am I on the right track ?

thanks

you are indeed, always have a few spare with you incase anything goes wrong. it doesnt really matter if they blow, its when they dont blow that things go wrong!

would it work if you just used a multi meter to measure the resistance? power=volts*amps (p=vi) and v=ir, so power= v(squared)/r.

or power=170/resistance.

all good?!

We've got a 10A in ours for Nissan Micra Fan. No relay as it is directly fired from thermo. Only component on the 10A fuse - wired to non-switched live

revised list:

3A fog lamp
3A dash gauges and warning lamps
10A hazards- I know same lamps as indicators
7.5A side lights and instrument lighting
5A brake lights
20A horn (does this really need 20A ?)
10A indicators
10A cigar socket for laptop
25A main and dip beam
25A ECU (also feeds coil pack) I need to call Raceline to confirm this one.
10A fuel pump Facet Blue Top (square noisy thing) again need to confirm this rating
10A rad fan (thanks hellfire, I've wired the rad fan in the same, no relay, straight from fuse box on live feed).
