WHAT DO I NEED TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING ONE??

If you have seen this on another forum, sorry trying to get as much info as possible...

Well the insurance have decided how much they are going to pay more for the bike, or should i say not pay me, but that is a different story.

This has meant the budget has come down for the Kit Car to £5k tops. Looking around there seem to be some nice Tigers which is one of my favorites but i now how some questions about the buying process of a kit car. I have obviously bought other cars but really need to know the differences.

THe majority are Q-reg, will this mean the correct year of registration is on the V5, for example 2002?

If it is a L-reg, will it have been registered in 1994 or will it have the newer date from when built on the V5?

They obvisouly need to have passed the SVA, does it need an MOT with it or is it like a brand new car that does not need one for three years?

Servicing - I know the majority of owner for this type of car are enthusiasts so probably do the servicing themselves, but how can that be proved. Is it just a case of looking at the receipts?

One last thing that i can think of at the moment, is that allot of the Pinto engines have been re-conditioned and the mileage for the advertisement is on the car with that engine, is there anyway of finding out the mileage before it went into the car.

Also anything general to look out for.

This is a bit new as you can see but i am keen to get a good car that i will not have to do anything to apart from upgrade should i so desire.

Cheers
D

Hit the nail on the head there; to ensure you don't buy a lemon you really should have someone mechanically savvy helping out.

The V5 will show the date registered as 2002, and crucially as a Tiger and the colour.

The newer date will be on the V5 showing the SVA pass date and emissions levels.

Most people like to MOT anyway each year.

You will know from meeting the owner and seeing the car - they will have been serviced DIY which is in some ways a good thing. You will know if a car has been looked after when you have seen a few and spoken to a few owners/sellers.

Doesn't really matter as the engines will all be a bit old. If they have been put back together well and sound/look/smell good then you will be on to a winner.

Look for the little extras that show the car has not been built on a tight budget - if someone has spent extra money on the frivilous stuff they have almost certainly spent it on the essentials.

Sorry to sort-of hijack this - my F27-Locost is for sale and may be what you want...

F27 which has been rebuilt to book chassis (peripheral tubes & front/rear ends; the tunnel & bulkheads are custom fabricated to give more leg room/width), professionally welded - better than some commercially available if I may say so. I never liked the crude F27 rocker arm front suspension so have converted to traditional outboard coilover set-up. Likewise I did not like the forward facing four-link set-up so that has gone in favour of the trailing links favoured by just about everybody else. Chassis is sprayed with 2-pack pale grey. The aluminium skinning is riveted and sealed with a urethane sealant/adhesive. There is no heater and no windscreen, although both would be possible to fit.

The bodywork is currently unpainted – my plan was to lacquer the Carbon parts and have the bonnet painted silver to match the aluminium.

Anything described as new has done circa 200 miles.

The Not-so-good bit!
The back axle is the highest ratio I can put in it (3.54:1). At red line it only pulls about 90mph (it gets there bl**dy quickly though!), which makes it too low geared for road use.

There are two routes, both which require some effort:

1. Change the rear end to deDion beam and use a 3.14 sierra diff, which I already have and will include in the sale (these are getting very scarce now). The beam, which is a direct swap, is available from GTS for about £150)

or

2. Upgrade the engine to something like a CBR1000RR, R1 or GSXR1000. That gets round the gear ratio problem and would make it stupidly quick. (The chassis would take major modifications to take a Car Engine/Gearbox set-up)

V.Low mileage CBR1000F engine on carbs - no reverse, 6 speed sequential shift (push-pull by s/wheel – see pics). It tends to miss on no.4 at idle but picks up as soon as the throttle is prodded – I think the carbs just need setting up.

New Discs F&R – Green Stuff Pads on Front
Reconditioned Front Calipers – New Sierra Calipers Rear
Poly Bushed all-round
Stainless Goodridge Hoses and Fittings all round including properly plumbed in Oil Cooler
New Girling Brake Master Cylinders in Bias Set-up
New Wilwood Clutch M/Cylinder
Tillet Racing Low-Back GRP Seats
Willans 3” 4-Point Harnesses (Unused Red Shoulder Pads included)
3.54:1 ‘English’ non-LSD Axle (new bearings in axle and diff)
Wet-laid Carbon F & R Wings, Nose & Scuttle
New AVO shocks all-round – Corner weights have been professionally set-up
Custom-made GRP Bonnet (mould included)
6J x 13” Revolution 4-Spoke Wheels with Maxsport Soft & Super-Soft Road-Legal Slicks
Powerspeed custom-fabricated Manifold & Silencer
PiperCross Filter on specially modified blank
Racetech convex mirrors
Cibie OscarPlus r/h dipping headlamps included
Removable rear number-plate/lamp assembly
Show plate on front (will include Full Size plate and bracketry for the MoT)
Momo suede racing wheel on quick-release boss
Original Bike tacho modified into Lucas housing
Sigma-sport bicycle speedo (V.accurate and includes average speed and max speed outputs)
New Mk2 Escort Quick rack
Totally unused bike Throttle Bodies will be included in the sale – use ‘em or sell ‘em

In current set-up the car weighs 420kg

If you are interested you can call me on 07887-557202 (anytime, please leave a message if needed; I'll get back to you)
