Glue or Tape for ABS

Hi All,

I have bought an estate car as my "workhorse" but it looks really rough on the top of the rear bumper.
A previous owner had stuck a clear plastic protector strip on it which looked poo. Edges peeling up and
dirt had got under it in places.
When I removed it some of the paint came off so now it looks almost as bad.

All is not lost, as I have found (on eBay) an ABS bumper guard (new) that's moulded to fit the car.

The questions are what do you all recommend to fix it on with? (ABS to ABS? bumper)
Some sort of glue, mastic, or double sided tape? and where do I buy it from?

Cheers in anticipation.

I would suggest Sikaflex or similar PU adhesive. Failing that a contact adhesive.

are you ever likely to want to remove it?

Ie if it gets bashed will you decide it looks tatty and want to replace it?

If so i'd suggest double sided tape and maybe two coloured self tappers.

Gaffer tape, if it's a Mondeo it's almost obligatory round here

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

I went on the Sikaflex website and found there's loads of different types.

Which one?

I like the idea of tape. I've seen "Mounting Tape" in Halfords but I'm not keen on the self tappers.

Is there a "sticks like **** to a blanket" tape?

Pic below shows what I'm trying to do. (Pic on the left stolen from eBay)

Cheers

Hi Paul,

I would use Sikaflex 221. This alone has been used to bond the carbon mods stone guards to the wheel arches on my Westy. These are quite an odd shape and it holds them in place no problem.
Sikaflex 221 can be bought from motor factors.
The trouble with tape is that rain will get underneath the panel and the sun will warm it up and eventually the sticky will go.

ABS should be solvent welded with acetone based adhesives

All solvent welded plumbing use ABS fittings and proprietory adhesives are available form all trade plumbing wholesalers.

Nail polish remover is basically acetone also.

I had to smile.

I bought a tube of Sikaflex 221 the other day and this morning the postie rang the door bell.

The bumper guard had arrived.

Took it out of the box to find it already has VHB tape on it....

And, two holes in each end that match the bumper mounting screws.

So, a squirt of super glue, maybe some Araldite, just to be on the safe side.

Cheers all
