Bit of a problem

Hi All,

i've hit a bit of a problem, it's been a while since i last posted

i love my car, well i loved my car. about a year ago i went to change the engine and one thing led to another and basically it blew up. i was fairly chipper about it and decided to upgrade to a 4age.

unfortunately since then, i've been having a few issue, amounting to losing my confidence in many things and suffering from a few other problems.

I haven't looked at the car in 6 months, and now i'm afraid to work on it, i don't want to sell it in pieces, but I can't bring myself to work on it.

to be perfectly honest this is only a small sympton of a much larger issues.

I know you'll all say just get on a do it, but i really struggle to to most things at the minute.

so a few questions

1) what would it be worth? It's finished and road legal and registered, has the 4age engine just not in the car.

2) how much longer do i give it before i give up on it

3) how much am i going to miss it, given that in three years i've driven it for 9 months

4) Any ideas what going on in my head cos i don't

many thanks

I think whats needed is a ride in one, get yourself that feeling of being in one again, that should hopefully remotivate you.

(i know you dont want me to say this but) dont give up

I wouldn't worry, just mothball it for a while. I had a 9-12 month gap in my build. Took a little time out to rebuild some enthusiasm but got there in the end.

Sounds like the lack of enthusiasm about the car might as you say be part of a bigger problem- might be worth talking it through with someone (definately before selling the car!!!!)...

Don;t give up mate - I think I have only done about 500 miles in 3 Years in Mine due to other problems.

1) Had a landrover with a blown boxing it into the garage a for a Year
2) When I did get it on the road the engin mounts broke, I had a Cracked Bell housing and it never fired right
3) So I upgraded to bike carbs and again had problems lik carbs coming loose and mis fires
4) Then there is the weather - up in Scotland the weather is hit or miss the few days I did take it to work I either froze or got soaked.....
5) Keep having to fix the speedo as it keeps loosing magnets so thats a crawl under the car and try and glue on more. or shift the pickup for the n-th time. .....

I also sometimes wonder why I bother.

So this year I now need an MOT and i'm sure my emmission won't pass (I stuggled at SVA 3years ago) so I am now converting to EFI......But the car is still in the lock up and has'nt moved since october. TOOO bloody cold.....

I love my car but I just can;t get time to enjoy it (or get it running long enough)

But hey this year We have plans to try and take the MK Indy to france in the summer..... so I better get it going...

I 'm bored at the moment need a new project or motivation but hell i'm not selling my car. It can sit in the lock up for a year if I'm not intrested it it......

Chin up what about trying to get some local Locosters (is that the correct term <---) to give you a hand.

Scot's do it better in Kilts.

MK INDY's Don't Self Centre Regardless of MK Setting !

Don't give up with it, it will only make you feel worse in the long-run. What you plan to do is not massive compared to the original build, and will be a real confidence booster when you do eventually do it and get that pleasing sense of achievement.
As said, just put it on one side for the moment and concentrate on the other things that are more important.

I haven't touched mine for 4 months and sometimes feel the same way. I'm planning for a fried to help me out with a difficult job that I'm having a confidence crisis with and hoping this will re-energise me.

Maybe the same approach would work for you to get the engine swapped over, and then you an tinker at your leisure to finish it off.

If you can't bring yourself to work on it, can you afford to pay someone to fit the engine and get it going? Then you could either enjoy using it yourself or have a working on the road car to sell.

Sounds like you're having a bad time and the car is only a small part of it.

I'd get yourself sorted and just leave the car where it is if you can. Come back to it when you've ready and try starting with the smaller jobs that make up an engine fit to help build the confidence back up.

I'm on year 10 and i'm thinking of painting my chassis!

I've had up to 12 months when i've done virtually nothing due to motivation. Currently i'm motivated

take a break, enjoy life, get a lift in someone elses car and then do a small easy job. tidy up the garage even.

most of all, enjoy life.

Don't worry about it.. At wrost mothball it, it's should be fun; no rush Took 5 years to build mine moved 3 times, many 6months when never got a chance to touch it.. Maybe go to a few meets/shows to get some motivation.

There is a lot to life but keep dreaming!

I'm in almost exactly the same boat as you. Built the car, drove it, loved it.

Bust it, spent a fortune in time and money rebuilding the engine, only to find I still have exactly the same fault.

Fitted a replacement engine, but just can't be motivated to get out into the yard and complete the install (wiring / plumbing to do).

I came close to selling it, then even closer to changing the engine to a zetec. But I've stuck with it, and although the MOT has expired, it's still insured.

I'm sure as soon as the weather improves, I'll be motivated to get out there, get it finished and get it back on the road.

Mike

No point treating the symptoms and the car is just one of the symptoms. Getting rid of it would be akin to giving cough medicine to someone with pneumonia. It may help the cough but doesn't cure the pneumonia.
You post aknowledges there are symptoms in several areas of your life and you need to address the problem that is causing these. Get down to your GP and start to investigate whats causing all this. He/she can start investigating and perhaps refer to specialist help.
Been there (or somewhere nearby), didn't like it, couldn't sort it myself but I found a man who could, thank God. (or rather thank Dr Blacker.)

It sounds to me like its not working on the car specifically thats the problem. Try to regain confidence by doing a small/easy job (not necessarily on the car) that you can complete and feel good about, then set the next task. If you want to do something on the car, don't think 'fit the engine and get it running perfectly' as one job, but break it down to chunks you can achieve and see some progress- e.g measure for engine/gearbox mounts, next job obtain metal/rubber for mounts, make up mount 1, mount 2....test fit engine to check mounts ......
I'm sure that if you sit down and make a list of tasks you'll not be surprised that its actually quite a big job overall. As you cross things off, you may find some things you hadn't thought of - dont get depressed, just add them at an appropriate point in the list. When you finally get the motor in and running you'll get a huge feeling of satisfaction and confidence boost.
Keep posting on this forum, we hope to hear things are getting better
Regards
Hugh

I too think Mr Dusty may be right. I've gone through something similar quite recently and it was only because I also had several physical conditions affecting me that I agreed to go to the Docs for the first time in about 10 years. The physical issues are now being sorted but we are also addressing some aspects of the other underlying issues. The nice thing is that the Doc hasn't actually said that "you've got x" or "you're suffering from y" as they are just labels and I am now starting to feel much better about things.

Not good being ill, not good being signed off, but really good that a sensible diagnosis has been made.

Now you have something that you can hopefully sort out, and then get back to a normal life.

Keep your chin up, and keep the faith!
